A big thank you to DelBoy for his research and identification of the names.

Note: The service record of Frederick George Wilson, Private (17385) of the Border Regiment has survived and shows his enlistment at Carlisle on 23 December 1914.
It is assumed that he and William Armstrong (17384), Donald Macdonald (17383) and Thomas Macdonald (17386) all enlisted together.

PTE. STANLEY ANDERSON, HERTS.
Stanley Anderson – age 19 – Private (46823) 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment.
Stanley had been employed in a motor works in Carlisle and in service at Westerhall when he enlisted as Private (M/283559) in the Army Service Corps. He was posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment but transferred to the Hertfordshire Regiment in France. He died five weeks later.
Born 1898 in Westerkirk. Son of David and Elizabeth (Henry) Anderson of Westerhall, Westerkirk, Langholm.
Died of Wounds on 24 September 1917 and buried in Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, France.


PTE. ROBERT ARMSTRONG, K.O.S.B.
Robert Armstrong – age 28 – Private (17901) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a shepherd at Eskdalemuir when he enlisted in the 2/5th KOSB. He was posted to the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in July 1915 but a month later he was killed.
Born 1886 in Westerkirk. Son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Brown) Armstrong of Enzieholm, Westerkirk, of Whitehill, Ecclefechan and of Burntcleugh, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 11 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial and on the Eaglesfield District War Memorial.


PTE. WILLIAM S. ARMSTRONG, BORDER.
William Scott Armstrong – age 20 – Private (17384) 8th Battalion, Border Regiment.
William enlisted in the 11th (Lonsdale) Battalion at Carlisle in December 1914 and landed with them at Boulogne in November 1915. At some point he transferred to the 8th Battalion.
Born 1896 in Westerkirk. Son of Robert and Janet (Scott) Armstrong of Rigg farm and of Crag View, Westerkirk.
Killed in Action on 5 July 1916 and buried in A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers, France.

Born 1891 in Hutton, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Scott) Beattie of Westerkirk Mains, Westerkirk and of Burnfoot, Ewes, Langholm.
Missing in Action on 30 March 1916 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. JOHN BUDDLES, LANCS. FUS.
John Buddles – age 32 – Private (41214) 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.
John enlisted in the 9th Lancashire Fusiliers before transferring as Private (27743) to the 12th South Staffordshires. He then moved as Private (111163) to the Labour Corps before returning to the Lancashire Fusiliers in the 16th and then the 1st Battalions.
Born 1885 Bardon Mill, Haltwhistle, Northumberland. Son of James (gamekeeper) and Jane Elizabeth (Picknett) Buddles of Lartington, Darlington, County Durham and of Westerhall, Westerkirk. Husband of Elizabeth Mary Buddles of 29 Easson Road, Darlington.
Died of Wounds on 2 November 1918 and buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.


GNR. JAMES DICKSON, R.F.A.
James Dickson – age 19 – Gunner (192833) 32nd Reserve Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
David had been a shepherd at Glendinning Farm, Westerkirk. He died of endocarditis in the Military Hospital in Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow.
Born 1897 in Teviothead, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Williamina (Oliver) Dickson and of James Dickson of Winningtonrig, Stobs, Cavers, near Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Died on Service on 18 March 1917 and buried in Teviothead New Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Stobbs War Memorial in Cavers Parish and on the Cavers and Kirkton Roll of Honour in Cavers Parish Church.

John was a farm servant at Enzieholm, Westerkirk when he enlisted in Dumfries in January 1915. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in November 1915.
Born 1895 at Brockwoodlees, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire (as Glendining).
Son of James and Elizabeth (Armstrong) Glendinning, of Enzieholm and of Camerabank, (or Kemerabank) Westerkirk, and of Fitzburn, Langholm, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 19 August 1916 and buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension, France.


PTE. THOMAS HOGG, K.O.S.B.
Thomas Hogg – age 22 – Private (23856) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1894 in Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire. Son of Peter and Jane (Little) Hogg of Burncleugh, Eskdalemuir and of Stennieswaterfoot, Westerkirk, Langholm.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines, France.
Also named on the Eskdalemuir Parish War Memorial and on the Ewes Parish War Memorial.

Thomas Irving – age 21 – Private (20247) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was a shepherd living at Effgill Cottage, Westerkirk when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915 and moved with them to France in April 1916.
Born 1897 at Glendinning, Westerkirk. Son of the late Frances Jane (Cowan) Irving and of John James Irving, and nephew of Elizabeth Maxwell Irving of Steel Road End, Newcastleton, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action 11 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the adjacent Ewes Parish War Memorial.
