WMR 44426
Map Ref NX 63569 77816

The memorial is in St Margaret's Episcopal church, New Galloway
These men do not seem to be listed on any local memorial (except the memorial in this church) nor have any link with Scotland. My unsubstantiated guess is that they were in training in this area before going off to war.

I missed photographing the two carved angels when I was in the church but luckily caught them in the photograph of a separate window memorial.

Finally I managed to get back to take some photos of the carved angels which form part of this memorial.

Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

Robert John Peel enlisted as Sapper (95) in the 1st Australian Division Signals in Queensland. He was evacuated from Gallipoli with influenza and spent some time in hospital in England. When he recovered he was discharged from the AIF to take a commission in the Royal Warwickshires. During his time with the RWR his address for correspondence was Rev C. Mayhew of St. Margaret's New Galloway. As far as I can make out from the service file the Rev. Mayhew had been a Chaplain in Queensland at some stage before the War.
John Ethell's father was the Rev. Alfred William Ethell of Laidley, Queensland so I guess was known to Rev. Mayhew.

Great info - I had been working on the theory that there was a convalescent home nearby for injured soldiers but I could not find one.

I wonder if the families of these Australians know that they are commemorated in a small Scottish church?

There is some more background on John Ethell at
http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8080/showPerson?pid=92310
The same site has some info on Peel (Svce. No. 95) but only upto his discharge in 1916.
