Sherbrooke St. Gilbert’s Church, 240 Nithsdale Road, Glasgow G41 5AD

OS Grid Ref: NS 561636

The church started as Sherbrooke Free Church, became Sherbrooke United Free Church after the union with the United Presbyterian Church in 1900, then simply Sherbrooke Church in the reconstituted Church of Scotland in 1929. Later, after the Union in 1942 of Sherbrooke and St.Gilbert’s Churches, the church now bears the title Sherbrooke St. Gilbert’s Church.
The original church by William McGibbon was ravaged by fire in 1994, its centenary year. In the years leading up to this, the congregation were working towards the full conservation of their historic sanctuary and during the final phase of this extended project the disastrous fire started in the roof. When the fire took hold the beams blazed, the stone spalled, the roof collapsed and the splendid turn of the century stained glass shattered and fell into puddles of molten lead and solder. Demolition teams arrived expectantly and a gathering crowd mourned. www.sherbrooke.org.uk

This photograph, which hangs in the vestry, shows the original war memorial prior to 1994.

Placed on a table, in front of the new Memorial are two Books of Remembrance, one for WW1 and one for WW2.
Both books contain details of those names listed on the War Memorial.

John,

Do you have details of who compiled these books?

the first two entries you've posted - John Stewart Adam and William Frederick Adam - they are both on my bank Rolls of Honour. William worked for the Bank of Scotland and John for the British Linen Bank. I don't have photos of either of them and would be interested in a copy of the photos they have.

I went to a Christening in this church a few years ago (pre SWMDF) and I discussed the Rolls with one of the people there. It was done by someone in the congregation at the time the new memorial was created.

If you contact the session clerk at the church I'm sure they will know who was responsible.

Adam

p.s. this is a very fine church and the restoration has made it a lovely place for a service.

The War Memorial is now sited in an area of the Church which appears to be a Chapel of Remembrance. Sorry the picture is not sharp in quality but it was as close as I could get to take the picture on my phone.
The books mentioned in a previous post are on a table at the right hand side with a large candle behind them.
A beautiful area of the Church.
