The link above should take you to a map "pushpin" next to the war memorial. You can switch between map and aerial photograph, although you might need to zoom out slightly for the aerial shot.

First World War names:

WW1 g-m by Scottish Military Research Group, on Flickr

WW1 m-w by Scottish Military Research Group, on Flickr

These appear to be First World War as well, although I can't find some of them in the CWGC and the names are out of sequence with the rest of the panels:

One of the First World War names is D. McKinstra HLI. He enlisted in the 8th Bn Highland Light Infantry as Daniel McKinstray.

On CWGC he is listed under a third spelling of his name - as McKinstry and his regiment is Royal Scots rather than HLI.

McKINSTRY, D
Rank: Private
Service No: 302492
Date of Death: 09/04/1917
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots, 9th Bn.
Grave Reference: I. B. 25.
Cemetery: ROCLINCOURT MILITARY CEMETERY

He had joined the 7th Royal Scots along with other 8th HLI in 1915 prior to service in Gallipoli. That service is recognised by his SNWM entry in the Highland Light Infantry Roll. It uses the same surname spelling as CWCG - McKinstry but gives his name as David, not Daniel. It also doesn't mention the 9th Bn but the CWGC is probably correct given the place of burial and date of death - Roclincourt, Arras on 9th April 1917 which would point to a 51st Highland Division death.

Surname: McKINSTRY
Forename: David
Rank: Pte
Service number: 7472
Decoration
Place of birth
Date of death: 9 April 1917
Theatre of death F&F
Cause of death: Killed in action
SNWM roll: THE HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY
Unit name: Unknown Unit attached to THE HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY
Other detail: latterly 302492 7th Bn. The Royal Scots.

Since he served in both HLI and Royal Scots, he gets another entry in the Royal Scots Roll. Just to make sure his last entry does not match any other entry it lists his unit as 1st Bn. That battalion was in Salonika in 1917 so presumably it is an error and should say 1/9th Bn. There is no mention of his prior service in the HLI.

Surname: McKINSTRY
Forename: David
Rank: Pte
Service number: 302492
Decoration
Place of birth
Date of death: 9 April 1917
Theatre of death F&F
Cause of death: Killed in action
SNWM roll: THE ROYAL SCOTS (LOTHIAN REGIMENT)
Unit name: Unknown Unit attached to THE ROYAL SCOTS LOTHIAN REGIMENT
Other detail: 1st Bn.

Can anyone get to the bottom of who Private Daniel/ David McKinstray/ McKinstry/ McKinstra was?

Adam

I'm a bit lost Shocked
Where does this come from: One of the First World War names is D. McKinstra HLI. He enlisted in the 8th Bn Highland Light Infantry as Daniel McKinstray.

SDGW has David McKinstray, Pte 302492. 7th Bn. Royal Scots.
Formerly 7472, HLI. Enlisted Shotts, Lanarkshire. Residence Newarthill, Lanarkshire.

SPeople has a David McKinstray aged 17 in Holytown, Lanarkshire - but I don't have the detail. There's no sign of a Daniel McKinstr* - or any other variants.

Does anyone have any idea when it was erected? I also understand it may have been moved from it's original location. Any pictures of the latter location would be good.

Thanks,

Swally

Seemingly the Memorial used to sit near the public park just off Currieside Avenue, I have been told it was possibly moved in the late 70s early 80s. Can anyone confirm?

https://canmore.org.uk/site/86223/shotts-dykehead-public-park-war-memorial

Archaeology Notes

NS85NE 119.02 87052 59659 [Removed to NS 8792 5984]
Location formerly entered as NS 8704 5965.
The war memorial noted at this location on the current (1985) 1:10,000 map has been removed to a site in front of the public library in Shotts High Street (at NS 8792 5984). Only the brick-built pedestal remains at its former location in a former public park.

Does this make any sense?????

I'm a bit wary about information about the removal of War Memorials on this site as they detail the removal of the War Memorial in Castle Douglas - something that did not happen.
I have supplied evidence of this to them but...............
