Hi guys
I was up at Inveresk churchyard in Musselburgh this morning just having a wander around, and found "Crookston War Memorial" 1914-1919 just on your left as you come in the main gate at section B. There is 59 names on the memorial. I took some pix and noted the names. I have had a search round here and can't find an entry for it. If the re is none, I will post details, once I sort out my notes and download my pix.

That would be great if you can post this memorial. I dodn't know if it is a civic one? Is Crookston part of Musselburgh?

I don't know if it is a Civic one either. Crookston (don't think it is a village) but an area between Musselburgh, Wallyford and Whitecraig. I must admit most of the servicemen on the list seem to come from this "area".

Where, on the site do you think I should post this information?

I'd post it in the civic section. It seems to cover a district rather than a church or something else.

Regards

Can you please add Loretto school to the list? We already have a link to the school's website showing the memorial.

Hi

My first post. I'm the Local History Officer for East Lothian. Someone recently came in with a request to find a Haddington War Memorial in one of the primary schools. His interest was in the fact that the border was painted by the artist William Gillies. Within about ten minutes I had tracked it down to the local school - it has been in their staff room for the past 90 years. I have images. I'll also have a scout around to see if I can add any others to the list.

Ok, additional to those in the first list are:

Cockenzie - UF Church
Dunbar - Lodge Dunbar Castle
Dunbar - Burgh School, Woodbush
East Linton - UF Church
East Linton - Parish Church x2
Gladsmuir - Parish Church x2
Gladsmuir - Parish Church (window to William Gemmill)
Hadd - Rugby Club
Hadd - Holy Trinity
Hadd - Public School
North Berwick - High School
Prestonpans - Preston Lodge HS
Prestonpans - UF Church
Tranent - Public School
West Barns - Village Hall

Whether they all still exist is another matter.

Oh, and I can't say too much, but watch out for a new memorial soon. I'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks for the update. School and church memorials are the ones we need to focus on now. It might be worth creating a thread for each one of these in the Lost? Memorials section of the forum since we know they existed but don't know their current location.

Not quite sure where to add this one. There is a memorial erected in 1993 to the 13 people killed at Ferny Ness, 12 naval personnel and one civilian. It was erected 50 years after the event and I believe the plaque may be on the Royal British Legion at Longniddry.

A memorial at the Loretto School is for the Boer War. Presumably there are other memorials at the school as well. The unveiling of the Boer War memorial was reported in the Edinburgh Evening News on Friday 24th July 1903. Unfortunately I have no details of the article.
