I was there right outside the pub. Went to see the first half of the rugby and when I came out the barriers were up.
Sadly my camera only took a couple of shots as the batteries went dead.
The memorial is lovely and the service was worth staying for.
The corner of King St; and Union St; was a cold place to stand.
The drums and pipes sounded and things looked up after they started.

Here are Anne's images. It looks like a stunning memorial and right in the heart of Aberdeen.

It looks to me that the kneeling soldier is from 1970's Northern Ireland rather than 2006. Is it based on the period when the last Gordon Highlander was killed on active service?

ps don't want to be negative about such a magnificent tribute but I do hope the rifle and musket won't suffer vandalism. We've seen that extremeties on memorials suffer damage (and always have, the Black Watch memorial was vandalised in Edwardian times)

Not sure about the 2006 date reference. The Gordons ceased to exist in 1994.

I've not heard any sugestion of that being the case, simply, that the two men depict soldiers from the early and late periods of the Gordon Highlanders history. The image angle is not that clear, but it looks like an SLR.

Update - It is an SLR

Went by the other night to see the statue just to see it with the lighting not impressed at all with the wee orange bulbs.
Thank goodness of the street lighting in The Castlegate.
