From the Edinburgh Evening News, Monday 07-Nov-2011

    Battle to find war artefacts

An appeal has been made to help track down all of Midlothian’s war memorials.

Midlothian Council's library service is undertaking a major research project to mark the centenary in 2014 of the outbreak of the First World War.

Staff want to record everything relating to the war as it affected people in Midlothian and to create a roll of honour for everyone who lost their lives.

Councillor Peter Boyes said: "We are really hoping as many local people as possible will scour their homes, look in the backs of drawers and in attics for any information at all about those who lost their lives."

The library is also appealing for information on memorials which may have been destroyed. Contact 0131-271 3976 or e-mail local.studies@midlothian.gov.uk.

I've spoken to the person who is organising this. He just happened to join the Edinburgh's War Project recently [Adam will hopefully know who I mean]. There might be some cross over and it would be good to share info.

The gentleman had become aware of this site and was considering jpining. Hesent me an e-mail with an excel file of all the memorials he has listed for far. Could I ask one of the Admin team what is the best way forward for this? Should I send the excel file on to you?
Regards

Dr Bogle has been threatening to join for some time and he would be very welcome here.
He, or his group, are now custodians of the former Penicuik Co-op memorial which was saved a while back.

Garry and I met Ken Bogle a few months back. I had a chat with him and as with most of us time is his enemy since he has been doing most of this work himself. It was good to see him get such a good spread in the EEN.

I think the best bet is to start making entries here for the memorials he has found, and when he has the time to join he can hopefully add extra information.

I'll leave it up to Lost in Tilloy to decide if he want to start adding the entries here or I'm happy to do it if I get a copy of the spreadsheet.

Thanks

Adam
