From an item in Sunday Telegraph of 30 Oct.

"The earliest recorded war memorial in Britain dates from the 8th century. It commemorates those killed at the Battle of Dunnichen, just north of Dundee, between armies of Picts and Northumbrians."

The Battle Cairn was built in 1985 to commemorate the 1300 anniversary of the battle of Dunnichen or Nechtansmere.

I don't think so, if erected in 1985 it could hardly be described as the earliest recorded memorial.

Perhaps they meant memorial which records the earliest war or battle?

I think the link I posted must be it. The battle was 7th century but the memorial is described as 8th century which is the age of this stone (wikipedia - battle of Dunnichen).

Yes, it's a great shout and well worth getting on the project. (plus the other cairn I accidentally found while googling). I will certainly bear it in mind unless our local Angus contributors can beat me to it.

I've a photo of this somewhere. It never occured to me until now it's a kind of war memorial.

I'll have a look for it and if I find it I'll post it. Failing that Forty Twa will most certainly have a piccy.
