Bathgate, Community, Old site, Location - Simpson Crescent - old site of memorial with cairn

I'm not sure if I should post these photographs which are of the old memorial taken in the 1990's. I never knew that there is apparently a new memorial. I'll post this for now and try to visit the new site when I get the chance, unless anyone else can post them.
The original memorial was a freestone obelisk surrounded at the rear and on both sides by a low wall. The commemoration and names of the dead were listed on bronze tablets set on the face of the wall.
As I remember the monument was almost hidden as the site had become squeezed in behind some bungalows on a slope above the road, accessible by a narrow stone stair which ran up between the buildings on Simpson Crescent, which is presumably why a new site has been created.

Jim

Thanks for posting these photos. I've been through Bathgate a few times and never been able to find it.

I believe it is a new site for the memorial rather than a new design. As far as I'm aware there is a plaque at the old site saying it was the original location.

Regards

Adam

The new site of the Bathgate WM is on a square just beside St John's Parish Church, Mid Street, Bathgate, EH48 1QD.

It is a sandstone obelisk about 2 1/2 m square at the base by ?10m high with the names of WW2 fallen on one large brass plaque on one side of the memorial. A soldier who died in Korea is also commemorated on a small plaque below this. At the reverse side of memorial from main inscription is a further small plaque to, I assume, more WW2 fallen. Behind the obelisk is a metal sculpture to the fallen of WW1, WW2, Korean War and VE Day. Two low walls with metal plaques give, I assume, the names of the fallen from WW1. The plaques do not mention the war they comemmorate.

I have come across this soldier in my research.

I cannot see him on this memorial. He is a bit of a mystery as I do not seem to be able to locate his Medal Index Card.

I will post him here for the information of other members.
If anyone has any information on him I would appreciate it being passed on.
