From The Scotsman, 17 September 1921.

    WAR MEMORIALS

ALVIE.— The memorial erected by the inhabitants of Alvie, Inverness-shire, to the men belonging to the parish who fell in the war was unveiled at Kincraig yesterday by The Mackintosh of Mackintosh, Lord-Lieutenant of the county, in presence of a large gathering of the ex-service men, local people, and visitors. The Rev. D. Maclean, parish minister, presided, and after a short religious service, in which the Rev. A. Mackenzie, U.F. Church, Alvie, and Rev. D. Macfarlane, Kingussie, took part, The Mackintosh was introduced by Mr Macpherson of Balavil, In the course of an address, The Mackintosh paid a tribute to the patriotism of the young men of the parish, and referred to the fact that the 2nd Gordon Highlanders had been raised in Badenoch, which district played a notable part in the Napoleonic Wars. The memorial was designed by Mr Riddel, R.S.A, Edinburgh, is built of native whinstone.

My feeling is that this thread should be re-named Alvie Parish memorial, Kincraig.

Just "flicking" through some of the names here; the last WW2 name
TRP. A Wilson, Lovat Scouts would seem to be:
SNWM
Surname WILSON
Firstname Alexander
Service number 325208
Date of death 02/07/1940
Decoration
Place of birth Gallorre Kingussie
Other
SNWM roll LOVAT SCOUTS
Rank Tpr

CWGC
Name: WILSON, ALEXANDER
Initials: A
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Trooper
Regiment/Service: Lovat Scouts
Age: 34
Date of Death: 02/07/1940
Service No: 325208
Additional information: Son of Robert and Margaret Wilson, of Gask, Perthshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Cemetery: AHAMPLISH CHURCH OF IRELAND CHURCHYARD (CO.SLIGO)

Why is he buried here?????

There are 4 men who died 7/8/1940 - including a L/Cpl William Rose R.E. from Aboyne, Aberdeenshire. The remaining 3 appear to be "local"

Family grave is in INSH (St.Eunan) at http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/scottishwargraves-ftopic792.html
with the inscription "drowned as result of enemy action"

The other casualties are from the sinking of the Troopship SS Mohamed Ali el-Kebir and the Aberdeenshire connection is explained at: http://mohamed.ali.el-kebir.freewebspace.com/The%20Casualties.htm

13 of the casualties from the 706 General Construction Company, RE had homes in Aberdeenshire. Many men from the Aberdeenshire County Surveyor’s Department volunteered in response to an appeal from the Ministry of Transport on 5 January 1940. They were mainly road maintenance workers, and were able to quickly adapt to aerodrome and similar construction work.

The Lovat Scouts were stationed in the Faroe Islands at this time and in July 1940 provided guards on the ill-fated SS Arandora Star.

When the ship was torpedoed several were killed and I believe Trooper Wilson was one of the 37 guards lost.

Thanks
