This is no longer in the location as depicted in this postcard. It's been cleaned up and relocated, which caused me no end of headaches as I tried to find it!

I'll post my photos of it later.

Info from the Clackmannanshire Council Website. I hope they don't mind me copying it verbatim.

"This site, which lies within the Alloa Glebe Conservation Area, is situated on the north side of the junction between Ludgate and Claremont and comprises a public open space with shrub margins, grassed areas and wide footpaths. The memorial, which is Category B listed, stands off centre towards the north of the site, centred on a circular hard standing with three radial footpaths extending out towards the north west, south and north east.

The memorial comprises an ashlar square stone pedestal with carved coat of arms and inscription on a convex south face. The remaining three upper pedestal faces have relief panels with moulded edges with the north facing panel containing a bronze plaque. There is a moulded pediment to the upper edge of the pedestal. The stone statue depicts a soldier of the Argyll & Southerland Highlanders standing protectively over a wounded comrade."

Found a wee stone in Dollar Cemetery recently and I think it's to the same 'Willie' A. W. Miller who's name appears last on the panel.

The MI reads:

"WILLIE A. W. MILLER, Imperial Yeomanry, of Grassmainston, Alloa, Scotland
Died 15th January 1901 aged 25 years and was interred at Pretoria, South Africa."

Haven't got round to starting a Dollar Cemetery & Churchyard Thread on the 'War Graves', but will do soon.

If you know Alloa, then you'll know where the town hall is, next to that is the registrars (big cream building on the left of the town hall) then theres a building that i think the council use but it looks derelict, you should see a roundabout, the boer monument is there.

which brings me to one of the reasons i joined this forum, on the boer memorial there is a John Wright Royal Highlanders says he died of wounds, im looking for any info on him. im researching my family tree and Wright is my grans side of the family, i know my grans brother is on the war memorial in Alloa, but so far ive drawn a blank with John Wright.

many thanks in advance Ruthie

ALLOA WAR MEMORIAL
UNVEILED BY EARL OF MAR AND KELLIE
The Earl of Mar and Kellie, Lord-Lieutenant of the county of Clackmannan, on Saturday unveiled a monument erected in a central part of the town in memory of the soldiers from the district who fell in the recent war in South Africa. The ceremony was performed in the presence of a large turnout of townspeople. The local battalion of volunteers and the local company of the Boys’ Brigade took part in the ceremony.
