Ken,

His MIC clearly states that he was kia 24/7/18 but that his surname should have been MacPhee on his medals. (trio)

MacPhee, McPhee and McPhie! Can anyone find him in the census to see what his family were calling themselves?

He's William Hay McPhee on the War Return, aged 34.

Cheers,
Derek.

Well it depends Rolling Eyes

The local RoH has him as L.Cpl. William McPhee of Barnsoul Cottage, Irongray. Mobilised 4/8/14 - so I think a "Regular" and probably not on 1911 census.
There is however a McPhie family at Barnsoul Cottage in Irongray in 1911 with James 74 and Georgina 64 married for 40+ years.
At their marriage in 1870 and on each census they are McPhee and on 28 April 1882 William Henry McPhee was born in Barnsoul Cottage.
The SNWM has him born "Kirkpatrick" The old name for the parish was Kirkpatrick-Irongray.

So I think I've got him now. Many thanks Derek's for your research.

Hi Ken,

Just to say that his regimental number, with the S/ prefix, doesn't correspond with being a pre-war regular soldier. Unfortunately, use of the mobilised/enlisted term in the SRoH can't really be relied upon. It looks like he was part of the original contingent of the 9th Gordons of 15th (Scottish) Division.
