From reading the local press it would appear that, as part of the memorial scheme, the committee placed two German guns given to the town at either side of the memorial. This caused outrage in Crieff.

"Sir, On behalf of many of the citizens of Crieff, I emphatically protest against the placing of these two ugly specimens of Hun brutality, in the shape of two German guns, beside the war memorial...."

"One is forced to wonder, if any of those responsible for this insult to our dead, have lost a son or relative...."

"Can it be possible that a Committee of sane people could so far forget themselves as to place two German guns alongside a memorial to the brave fellows who suffered and died......."

"Perhaps these same guns killed some of those whose names we are to honour on the panel of the memorial. What Irony!...."

"I do not believe there is a town or parish in the whole country where such a thing has been attempted, and we will be the laughing stock of the whole country..."

"Their terrible significance must grievously affect those whose gallant dead are to be commemorated in the shrine..."
