Quite a treck up an exeedingly narrow road to reach it but a lovely location when you get there. Someone has made a half-hearted attempt to clean the face of the stone.

Ian,
Thank you for posting this memorial.
The very first man listed is "one of mine".
Sgt William Ashcroft, son of Alexander and Janet Kerr Ashcroft, of Hopehouse, Ettrick, Selkirkshire, also appears on the Hawick Roll of Honour and the Cavers & Kirkton Parish Roll of Honour.
He was killed by a sniper in 1915 near Bethune and is buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner. _________________

Just thought I'd post a couple more pics. The pedestal had been recently cleaned when these were taken and the names are easier to read.

I have not been able to trace a military record for Ian but he was reportedly serving with the Cameron Highlanders in 1940.
He was for many years a farmer at Midgehope, Ettrick and was a Selkirk County Councillor.
He died, aged 46, in Montana, Valais, Switzerland.
Born 1901 in Edinburgh. Son of the late Colonel Ewan Campbell (died 1922) and of the late Jessie Campbell (died 1944) of Drummond Place, Edinburgh.
Died on 2 February 1948. Burial place not known.

Mary Irvine McRobert, aged 27, of Nether Dalgleish, Ettrick was a munitions worker. She died of tuberculosis in the Annex of the Bangour Hospital at Broxburn, Uphall, West Lothian.
Born 1921 in Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. Daughter of Joseph (a shepherd) and of Isabella (Scott) McRobert.
