There are two references to this memorial but no clue to its current location.

It is on the UKNIWM ref 5801.

From "The Scotsman" 14th February 1921

STIRLING

In the Erskine U.F. Church, Stirling , a memorial for the men of the congregation who fell in the war was unveiled by the Hon. Wm. Watson, K.C. , Advocate-Depute, and dedicated by the Rev. G.G. Campbell, M.A. Alloa

The Eskine Church is now Stirling YMCA - possibly the memorial is still there?

Only the facade of the original chuch remains and there's a couple of men listed on family graves (non of them CWGC burials), see here:

I've added a few bits and pieces to columba's post above listing the men on the Erskine Church Memorial showing that some of them are listed on family gravestones in the various local cemeteries.

I couldn't think why this guy's name was familiar....

Posted by Delboy on Wed Oct 19, 2011 on the Bridge of Allan thread.
Walter Wingate Primrose, Lieut. R.A.F.
(Glasgow Herald 1st of March 1917)

That's an interesting mix of units for Lt Primrose.

Listed as RFC by CWGC and formerly RM, RND.
RAF on Bridge of Allan memorial
and RN in the paper!

There does appear to be some interesting history (and questions) about this family. In 1911 they were in Stirling, then at some stage in Bridge of Allan, then Bishopbriggs - so why is Walter buried in the South side of Glasgow? His death was registered in Huntingdon.
As a Royal Marine, I would have expected him to join the Royal Naval Air Service rather than the RFC.
Robert Primrose was a Chaplain to the RN Division and served at Gallipoli(he has a Medal Card) There are some references which place Walter in the Division at that time and place; and he may have been seriously wounded there.
Interesting.

I wonder if Catherine was a Wingate? (Walter's middle name.)The Wingates were quite well known in Stirling - they had a printer/stationer's shop in Barnton Street (did wedding invitations etc). Probably closed in the 1980s.

Sandra - Catherine was a Wingate (Catherine Michie Wingate) but from Kelvinside in Glasgow where her father (Walter) was a Calico Printer.
She was 21, while her new husband Robert 35 was a widower and United Presbyterian Church Minister of Dowanhill, Partick, Glasgow.

Oops! Seems Wingates are still alive and printing! Shows how often I go along Barnton Street.

Stirling Observer 1st September 1914
Rev Mr Primrose, Erskine Church, has been appointed chaplain to Glasgow Naval Volunteers. His son, Mr Clifford is in the navy and Mr Harold is in Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. (paraphrased)
Like many other newspapers of the time, Stirling Observer printed a "roll of honour" of the names of men as they enlisted. I seem to remember another of Rev Mr Primrose's sons was named as having enlisted in 1915.

Erskine Congregation merged with Viewfield Congregation to form Viewfield Erskine, worshipping in Viewfield Church. I had hoped that the memorial from Erskine went with the people but it seems not. I asked a friend to check and it is not on display in Viewfield (note the careful choice of words there - it may be out of the public view; I don't know.)
On the plus side, I now have photos of Viewfield's two war memorials, so watch this space!

Update on this memorial. It is still lost!!

Doors Open Day was a good opportunity to visit the Youth Hostel which now occupies the site of Erskine Church. The warden had no information about a war memorial - there certainly wasn't one when the SYHA took over the lease of the building. I happened to be there at the same time as a lady who had brought along photos of the interior (it was her family kirk and her g grandfather is buried in the small graveyard attached). She has no memories of there ever being a war memorial and there was certainly nothing apparent on the photos.
