While looking for something else I ran across this article in the Peeblesshire News:
http://www.peeblesshirenews.com/news/15654718.Skirling__39_s_memorial_to_the_fallen/?ref=rl&lp=1

"AS Tweeddale remembers the fallen this weekend, Helen Nisbet has sent us this photo of a remembrance bench beside Skirling's war memorial.
She told us: "I am a carer for SB Cares and work locally. While attending clients in Skirling last year I noticed that the bench had appeared and thought it was poignant.
"The bench was requested by Skirling Community Council, designed by resident Karen McDonald and then made by local Blacksmith David Gardiner."

Looking at the memorial I was struck by the two brothers (Roddick) killed in WW2 who served in the same regiment (12th Royal Lancers) and then found that the first man named on the WW1 panel was their uncle. (their mother's brother)

Sub-Lieutenant ALEXANDER DAVID GIBSON-CARMICHAEL, aged 21.
HM Submarine "E16" Royal Navy.
Died 22/08/1916.
Son of John M. and Amy K. Gibson of Maida Vale, London. Native of Peeblesshire.

Second Lieutenant ANDREW THOMAS GEORGE RODDICK, age 21.
Service Number 89529
12th Royal Lancers, Royal Armoured Corps
Son of Charles Irving Roddick and Eleanora Fitzroy Roddick. of Whitfield, Kent.
Died 23/05/1940 and buried in Lynde Churchyard, Nord, France.

Lieutenant JOHN CHRISTOPHER RODDICK, aged 20.
Service Number 288090
12th Royal Lancers, Royal Armoured Corps
Son of Charles Irving Roddick and Eleanora Fitzroy Roddick, of Whitfield, Kent.
Died 17/06/1944 and buried in Assisi War Cemetery, Italy.

Just to round off the WW2 panel.

Able Seaman ADAM HENDERSON GRAY, age 22.

Son of David Turnbull Gray and Mary Rodger Gray, of Skirling.
Died of Wounds 16/05/1940 and buried in VELSEN (DRIEHUIS-WESTERVELD) PRIVATE CEMETERY, Noord-Holland, Netherlands.

In May 1940 the destroyer "Whitshed" took part in demolition and evacuation at Ijmuiden and Amsterdam, carried supplies to Dunkirk and embarked Irish Guards, assisted in evacuation at Hook of Holland and assisted in evacuation at Ostend, until 18th May.
