Kilmaurs - Kilmarnock & Louden District

The Kilmaurs war memorial is a freestone obelisk standing on a series of four octagonal steps. The bronze memorial tablets are set into the stone pedestal faces which project out from the four sides. A bronze soldier, head bowed and arms reversed, by Glasgow sculptor Kellock Brown is set at the front of the monument (Brown executed the same figure for the Penpont memorial). The memorial stands on a rise in Morton Park.

The commemoration is carved on the stone shield at the base of the obelik. The carving is becoming eroded and reads:
IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL
REMEMBRANCE OF
THOSE FROM THIS
DISTRICT WHO DIED
FOR THEIR COUNTRY
IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 - 1918 - 1939 - 1945
THIS MEMORIAL WAS
ERECTED BY PUBLIC
SUBSCRIPTION

Some added information from wikipedia (but I checked the facts with a local history book):

"Kilmaurs has a particularly fine war memorial situated in the Morton Park (gifted to the village by George Morton of Lochgreen, Troon in 1921.) The memorial itself was erected at a cost of £900 raised by public subscription and unveiled on 3 April 1921. 45 men gave their lives in the Great War and 10 men and 1 woman in the Second World War"

I agree, I think this is a magnificient memorial, a very effective sculpture and the placement of the memorial sets it off perfectly.

Here are some extra photos

I like the decision to give the woman killed in world war two a little extra prominence by including her at the top of the list.

Graeme

I've seen this placing of a woman's name first on Great War panels, I don't think it was as common for the Second World War where they are more likely to be included alphabetically.

From earlier this year:

http://www.s1kilmaurs.com/news/town-set-to-remember-as-name-added-to-kilmaurs-war-memorial.html

Town set to remember as name added to Kilmaurs war memorial
8 February

Kilmaurs will remember as Cpl Alexander Herrall will be added to the town's war memorial

Another name will be added to Kilmaurs' war memorial on Saturday 16th February [2011], when the ceremony to add Corporal Alexander Herrall to the roll will be held at 1pm.

The ceremony will mark the 60th anniversary of Corporal Herrall's death, when as a member of the Gloucester Regiment, he lost his life during the Korean War.

Rev Urquhart will conduct the service, attended by members of the local Royal British Legion, and members of Cpl Herrall's family, Kilmaurs Community Council, local schools, and hopefully a large turnout from the local community will also be welcomed at the ceremony.

The Gloucestershire Regiment captured Hill 327 on the date Corporal Herrall died.

From the minutes of Kilmaurs Community Council:

http://kilmaurs.btck.co.uk/Minutes

Following the placing of the plaque for Cpl Herrall, the death of Pvt Ian Stewart of Kilmaurs while in Korea was discussed, but his was as a result of a swimming accident and not due to active service.

It seems a bit harsh since a fairly substantial number of names recorded on Scotland's war memorials record men and women who died of natural causes or accidents.

It seems the Kilmarnock Community Council are not as strict because they have a Private I Stewart listed on their Korean War panel.

From

http://www.pembrokeshire-war-memorial.co.uk/page54.htm

Pembroke Dock is home to the only Military Cemetery in Wales....The World War Two burials include nineeen servicemen killed on 28 April 1942, during an explosion at a mine disposal course at the Defensible Barracks.

And

http://www.robertjakes.co.uk/enl_RP_PD_trail.htm

.. soldiers who died in an accidental explosion while practising the techniques of disarming mines. The incident occurred on 28th April 1942. The men killed were nine Royal Engineers, four men from The King’s Own Scottish Borderers and four who were serving with The Pioneer Corps.
An incredible footnote – one officer escaped certain death that day when he chose to leave the tragic scene to answer the telephone!
