Hi,

On the Crail Memorial are the names of John W Keeble, Mortimer Keeble and Walter Keeble.

On checking the CWGC I found John Keeble, Owen Mortimer Keeble and Walter James Keeble.

The Waid Academy has John Keeble, Mortimer Keeble and J Walter Keeble.

All three were the sons of Percy W and Grace Keeble, Crail.

I know on some memorials the middle names were left off but was it common to miss out the first name of a person? Perhaps Mortimer was his preferred name. I'm also wondering because of the names John and Walter James that somehow their names have been mixed up when the memorial was made and also the Waid Roll of Honour.

Thoughts?

Alex

I think such variations in names are relatively common (say one percent?) especially when you also look at entries on family gravestones. I have even seen instances of a surname spelt in two different ways on a single gravestone.

Some families have a particularly strong tradition of carrying names forward so you might get for example William as the first son (named after the grandfather perhaps) and then a John William as the second son. If the first son then died, the second would become known as William to carry the name on. The Royal family do something similary, Prince Charles will certainly not become King Charles - King George is likely.

My next door neighbour is known as John to his family but Duncan to everyone else. Another guy I met was christened Alfred, known as Alf to his workmates and Eddie to family so variations can have a range of reasons.

Perhaps not much help here, but I think you need to allow the names 'room to manouvre' Laughing

Dear Alex,

The Keeble brothers, were my uncles (my mother is their sister) and I can clear up the confusion with their names for you. There were three boys. Owen Mortimer Keeble (known as Morty), Walter James Keeble and John Watson (known as Jack) Keeble.

You are right in their parents names, Grace Keeble and Percy Keeble.

I hope that this clarifies your question.

Kind Regards

Fiona Duncan (Neice)

Fiona,

I don't think Alex has been around the forum for a while, but thank you very much for taking the time answer the query.
Bynamea around where I live are very common, as is being known primarily by a middle name.

Cheers,
Derek.
