St George's West original formed from the Free Church congregation who split from St George's in nearby Charlotte Square in 1843. It was Free St George's until 1900, then St George's United Free Church until 1929 when it became St George's West.

This congregation had the last laugh over the original St George's congregation which had to merge with St Andrew's on George Street in 1964 because they couldn't afford the repairs to their magnificent church.

You would have throught the obvious solution would have been to merge the two St George's together again but church mergers are obviously a law unto themselves!

Since my last post St George's West has now merged with it's old church. I think they still own the St George's West building.

St George's West is still open, I was in there a couple of weeks ago. It seems to be some sort of cafe/drop in centre - I don't know if it is still used for worship but the memorials are still there on display.
