Derek I thought I might add a photograph of the first WWI panel which is slightly closer and might be a bit easier to read.
The wreaths on the memorial were carved by Edinburgh sculptor Alexander Carrick who was also responsible for the bronze memorial plaque to Sir Walter Scott in the town.

Henderson, G. S., VC, DSO, MC, Cpt., Manch. Rgt. |
(Glasgow Herald 9th of August 1920)
"Captain G.S. Henderson, 2nd Manchester Regiment, who is reported to have been killed in the arab attack on a British reconnouting column near Hilla on July 24th, came through much heavy fighting in the war, and frequently distinguished himself on the field.
He held the Military Cross, and was several times mentioned in despatches.
The late officer who was about 25 years of age, was the only son of Mr Robert Henderson, Mounthooly, Jedburgh."
Name: HENDERSON, GEORGE STUART
Initials: G S
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Captain
Regiment/Service: Manchester Regiment
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Age: 26
Date of Death: 24/07/1920
Awards: V C, D S O and Bar, M C, 5 times Mentioned in Despatches
Additional information: Son of Robert and Mary Henderson, of Mount Hooly, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 31 and 64.
Memorial: BASRA MEMORIAL
Citation: An extract from "The London Gazette", dated 29th Oct., 1920, records the following:-"For most conspicuous bravery and self-sacrifice. On the evening of the 24th July, 1920, when about fifteen miles from Hillah (Mesopotamia), the Company under his command was ordered to retire. After proceeding about 500 yards a large party of Arabs suddenly opened fire from the flank, causing the Company to split up and waver. Regardless of all danger, Capt. Henderson at once reorganised the Company, led them gallantly to the attack and drove off the enemy. On two further occasions this officer led his men to charge the Arabs with the bayonet and forced them to retire. At one time, when the situation was extremely critical and the troops and transport were getting out of hand, Capt. Henderson by sheer pluck and coolness, steadied his command, prevented the Company from being cut up, and saved the situation. During the second charge he fell wounded, but refused to leave his command, and just as the Company reached the trench they were making for he was again wounded. Realising that he could do no more, he asked one of his N.C.O s to hold him up on the embankment, saying ' I'm done now, don't let them beat you'. He died fighting."

Henderson is also commemorated on a plaque in Jedburgh, on the Gordon War Memorial and at Kelso. _________________

These two men are not on the memorial or any other as far as I can see, they both have a link with Jedburgh. Unsure if they are brothers but both have a father called John.
Only four men with this surname on the CWGC/SNWM databases. The other two being the Dumma brothers who are listed on both the Kelso and Yeltholm memorials.

Derek - it's a bit odd but in 1901 at Alnwick, Northumberland were John Dumma (34), Elizabeth (28 ), Annie (7), Robert (6), James (4), Leontine (1)
With the exception of Elizabeth, born Berwick, they were all born in Northumberland.
Ann Waugh Dumma b. Dec Q 1893, Glendale. Robert Jameson Dumma b. Mar Q 1895, Glendale. James Dumma b. June Q 1896, Glendale and Leontine Chipman Dumma b. March Q 1900, Alnwick.
(There is no sign of a James or Robert J Dumma on scotlandspeople) _________________ Ken |

There is a John Dumma who died in 1922, aged 83 years, buried in the churchyard at Branxton, Northumberland. His wife was Agnes Bell. _________________

They are on the Oxnam war memorial. Oxnam is east of Jedburgh and borders Northumberland. Glendale is near Wooler and both are near the border.
Thanks
