I'd love to know Walter's link to Crawfordjohn. He spent all of his younger life in Kirkcudbrightshire and is listed on the Dalbeattie WM and on the Higher Grade School Memorial but I cannot see him on the 1911 census anywhere in Scotland. I did wonder if he married a Crawfordjohn girl but again nothing on scotlandspeople.

I can't answer Ken's question but many years ago Crawfordjohn Heritage Venture had a query about one of the people listed on the war memorial, [not Walter Slingsby], and we could find no link with anyone in the parish.

Perhaps Walter Slingsby married a girl who had some link with the village but whose family was no longer living there.

Am I correct in thinking that anyone could request to have a name recorded on a particular memorial?

Janet

Every community had their own criteria for including names but I've seen a few where the husbands of local women were included.

On my home town's memorial in the north of Scotland it lists a Yorkshire man who was killed whilst serving in an Australian battalion. He had been in Australia since 1911 and I don't even know if he'd ever visited the village where he is commemorated.

Regards

Adam

Re the names on Crawfordjohn war memorial -

Robert Lauriston is the son of George Lauriston [a ‘horsekeeper on estate’ at Abington in the 1901 census] & Marion Ritchie.

James Galloway Russell is the son of William Russell, a railway traffic inspector, & Agnes Galloway. According to the 1891 census James was born in Perth. In that year they are in Abington with Agnes’ brother, John Galloway.

George Haig. – In the 1901 census there is a 7 year-old George Haig, son of John Haig, baker, living in Abington. In 1911 George is an apprentice blacksmith.

James Graham. – In Abington in the 1911 census there is a 12 year-old James Graham, born Lanark, enumerated with his grandparents, Thomas Gibson, shepherd, born Lanark, & his wife Agnes, born Pettinain.

I'm getting a wee bit closer to linking Walter to Crawfordjohn (I think!)
The Army Register of Soldiers effects lists his legatees as his sisters, Mrs Mary Norman and Mrs Ada C Thornhill, and a Mrs Isabella V K Blacklaw.
On the 1891 census in Dalbeattie are his sisters Mary Jane Slingsby and Ada Slingsby - so that bit is OK.
In 1911 Isabella Blacklaw, born Stow, Midlothian, and her family are in Crawfordjohn where her husband William was a ploughman born Traquair, Peebles. Isabella Veitch Knox had married William in 1902 in Traquair.
So she is the person named as a legatee but I still don't know what the relationship was and why it warranted his name being added to the memorial!
