Wigtownshire Free Press (26/10/1916): Official intimation has been received by Mrs MacKinnon, Hill Cottages, Pinwherry, that her son, Captain Ian MacKinnon, Canadian Camerons, was killed in action on 8th October. The deceased officer, who was 29 years of age and a native of Tiree, was conducting a mission in Canada when war was declared, and he joined the Canadian Camerons in November 1914, getting a commission as a second lieutenant. In June 1915 he came to Britain with his regiment, and landed in France in February. His gallantry and devotion to duty were soon recognised, and he was promoted to Captain, and was attached to the Machine Gun section. Previous to emigrating he graduated MA at Glasgow University, where he was studying for the ministry. For a year he assisted the Rev DH Paterson, Airdrie Parish Church. Deceased, who had a charming manner, enjoyed the same popularity in the Army as he did in civil life.
