From the Galloway News 8/4/1944
Information has been received by Mr A. Davitt, formerly station-master at Kirkcudbright and now of Kirkcowan, that his eldest son Captain J T Davitt, who was presumed lost at sea through enemy action, is now officially reported killed on active service. Educated at Penninghame School, Newton Stewart and Whithorn Higher Grade School, he went to sea during the last war and, while serving at a cadet with the firm of T & J Harrison of Liverpool, he had the misfortune on his first voyage to be torpedoed. His brother resides in Kirkcudbright.
