Also listed on the Glasgow Police memorial.

(Glasgow Herald 28th May 1915)
"Mrs Heron, High Street, Port William, has received intimation that her only son, Private William Heron, was killed in action in France, at the endof last week. Previous to the outbreak of war Private Heron was a member of the Glasgow Constabulary, and he joined the Scots Guards at the beginning of hostilities."

A mail I got from Bill Heron (who I met in B&Q in Ayr) concerning 2 names on this memorial (one his namesake).

Above should be the details of William Heron who appears on the Portwilliam memorial. He was born on 20th January 1888 to James Heron and Margaret McKie, the family lived at Near Fell Cothouse, Glasserton until his father died on 13th November 1890. His mother must have taken the family to Portwilliam where she lived until her death on 19th August 1927 at High Street Portwilliam. William James although single had a daughter Jamesina Heron born 5th July 1901 but died on 17th April 1902, he was my Grandmother's 2nd cousin.

the second person I have detail of is James Black who also appears on the Portwilliam memorial. He was born on 10th February 1889 at Portwilliam to Alexander Black and Jane Heron. He was a Coachman to Sir Herbert Maxwell of Monreith before enlisting at Kingston on Thames. James was a single person and my Grandfather's step brother.

The Galloway Gazette (28 August 1915) carried a photograph of William McQuaid, and reported: Private McQuaid was wounded in the fighting on the 12th July at the Dardanelles, and died in hospital on the 21st of his wounds. Before the war he was employed on Monreith estate. He leaves a widow and young child.

I'm not sure about Peter M. Barr on this memorial, it's not clear to me what service he belongs. Is it the R.N.R. or is he a Gunner? There are few Peter Barr's on CWGC or SNWM but I can't figure him out.
Lt. G. Outram is a bit of a mystery too, he should be easily identifiable, but he isn't!?

The last WW2 casualty Robert Shorrock isn't on CWGC, he died at home in December 1942 in Port William of T.B. and pneumonia. On his D.C. he is described as a "Sea Farer" aged 51. The memorial lists him as R.N.R.

The WW1 and WW2 Milhench casualtes are likely related. The name is so rare, there's four others of the same surname. Similarly the two Kevan's of each war listed, just 8 others of the surname on CWGC.

Cheers,
Derek.

Derek - I can now answer some of these questions.
Peter McMaster Barr, enlisted in the Royal Navy (J 59197) in September 1916 but was transferred to the RNR (DA 14695) in February 1917. He was Invalided out due to TB in January 1918 due to TB and died at home on 19 May 1918. On his D.Cert. he is shown as Gunner, Royal Naval Reserve, Hydrophone Operator.
I have sent his name forward as a possible non-Com.
His brothers, Alexander and Walter, are also on the Memorial.

G. Outram was a puzzle - but on the memorial plaque in the Parish Church he is Edmund Outram.
He was a 2nd Lt. 26th Manchester Regiment. Killed on 1 July 1916 at the Somme.
His parents came to live in Port William after the war but later moved to Yorkshire.
His father was the senior Captain of the Allan Steamship Co. and, as the Master of the SS Alsatian, served as a member of the Royal Naval Reserve when his ship became an armed merchant cruiser and the flag ship of the 10th Cruiser Squadron. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his service.

Robert Shorrock, served in the navy throughout WW1 until discharged to the Reserves in 1920.
He had been born in Blackburn and married a Glenluce lass in 1918, settling in Port William.
Intriguingly he is shown as SIGmn. on the War Memorial but as Fireman on the Church Memorial.

I'm still not sure about the Milhench's but I suspect they were cousins.
Peter was born in 1888 in Mochrum (parents Robert & Jane) and was killed in 1918 serving with the Canadian Infantry.
James was born in 1894 (parents James & Jane) and was the Master of the SS Ocean Trader. He died in 1942 and is buried in Boston, Massachusetts.

Another man you mention later was Robert Hailes, who had no obvious link to the area.
Robert was the Butler to the Maxwell family at Monreith House.
He was born in Eye, Suffolk and married in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Sadly his daughter, who had been born in Wrexham, died in 1911 (at nearly 4 years old) and is buried in Mochrum Churchyard.

He was 40 years old and a Private in the Royal Scots (what a culture shock that must have been)
