General Grierson died a few days after landing in France with the BEF in August 1914. Had he lived he may have taken the job of Commander-in-Chief instead of Douglas Haig.

He wrote the definitive reference work on the Pre-1908 Scottish Volunteers. "Records of the Scottish Volunteer Force 1859-1908"

He appears to be the very first Death notice of a soldier in the Glasgow Herald from the war (Aug 19th 1914).
Interestingly he was repatriated for burial in Glasgow which, must be a rare thing among those who died abroad during the war.

The great and the good could pull strings early in the war to get bodies of loved ones repatriated but the practice was stopped in the spring of 1915 I think.
