Aberdour - Dunfermline District
The Aberdour war memorial takes the form of a shrine set into the face of the kirk. The design is classical with pillasters capped by a pediment under which is a niche housing the sculpture of a female figure holding a wreath. The kirk stands in the Main Street.

(edited by spoons - this building was the church when the memorial was erected but since 1926 has served as St Fillan's Church Hall)

Although situated on St Fillan's Church Hall it lists all Aberdour war dead.

It looks like one of the Aberdour men listed was lost during 34th Div's costly attack at the Somme on 1st July

in doing a family research it was brought to my attention that my father John Cunningham always said that he had a relative whose name was on a memorial at Aberdour .his Grandfather was samuel Cunningham born in ireland but was brought to scotland by his parents and settled in Port Glasow in 1800s and samuel later married in Dundee to an irish girl name Mary Ann Sweenie and he had a brother named Robert and a sister named Ann .I wonder where the connection came in

The town clock used to be on this site and was moved to make way for the memorial. The town clock is now near the train station and has a plaque on it to explain the relocation.

Unveiled 8 Nov 1920.

While passing through Aberdour yesterday we noticed the War memorial. As it was a beautiful sunny day we took these pictures.

PTE. R. ANDERSON, D.G.
I think that the regimental abbreviation D.G. is meant to be Dragoon Guards however Robert was with the Dragoons, a different cavalry regiment.
I did some research on him while trying to identify a Trooper Robert Anderson, Royal Scots Greys named on the Applegarth and Sibbaldbie Parish memorial in Dumfriesshire, and on the Cavalry section of the nearby Lockerbie War Memorial.
He is the only Robert Anderson I can find with a connection to a cavalry regiment, and the 2nd Dragoons were the Royal Scots Greys, but I cannot link him to Dumfriesshire.

Robert Dickson Anderson was born in1891 in Leith North, Midlothian. He was resident in Aberdour, Fife when he enlisted at Kirkcaldy, Fife. He was serving as Private 10254 in Old 5th Reserve Cavalry Regiment (1st and 2nd Dragoons) when he died, aged 23, in York on 22 March 1915. He is buried in York Cemetery.
Soldiers effects names Father – Alexander Brothers – John and William Sister - Georgina
and the 1901 census at 7 Lily Place Aberdour lists Alexander 46, Georgina 45, William 15, Georgina 14, John 11 and Robert Anderson 9. The family were still in Aberdour in 1911.
