In an enclosure at the side of the road just south of Blyth Bridge. A striking conical stone structure containing a detailed memorial of those who fell in the great war.

Erected by the heritors, members and adherents of Kirkurd Parish Church and relatives of those commemorated.

Having checked on the CWGC site, I am posting a few discrepancies/ items of interest.

A D Gibson-Carmichael - CWGC has his date of death as 22.8.16.

The two Millers on the memorial were brothers.

A W B Miller was buried in a German cemetery and relocated at Harlebeke. The memorial should, of course, have 'RFC' not 'RAF'.

CWGC has Robert Dickson as a major.

John Ballantyne does not appear on the CWGC site.

HM Submarine E16 was lost off Heligoland in 1916 with 31 crew. Its commander was Kenneth Duff-Dunbar DSO of Ackergill Tower in Caithness and is listed on the Ackergill & Hempriggs War Memorial. Duff-Dunbar’s son, born 3 months after his death, was killed in action in 1944 whilst serving with the 7th Bn Seaforth Highlanders in Normandy. I don’t know if he is listed on the same memorial but I would be surprised if he isn’t.

Trawling through the web threw up that the remains of E16 was found again in 2004 by a German survey company.

Oops! Sorry about that! I was working from the list which Derek modifies as memorials get covered. I was looking at Blyth Bridge (still to be done, according to the list) and I decided that, given the dedication and location, it certainly should go under 'Kirkurd'.

I claim no photographic superiority and think the posts should be merged.

No idea how I missed Ballantyne - I entered him as 'Australian' and then as 'unknown' but wasn't getting anywhere. Thanks for that.

One of the stranges memorials I have seen, both in its construction and the great detail of the inscriptions. If only they were all like that.

The World War One submarine E16 has been located in Helgoland Bight, a part of the North Sea to the south of Jutland.
The German dive team used Draeger Dolphin rebreathers. It took measurements, stills and video footage of the wreck, which it has shared with the U-boat Museum in Germany and the Submarine Museum in Gosport.
The E-class submarines proved very successful at harassing Germen shipping. E16 was responsible for sinking the destroyer V188 in July 1915, and the U-6 in September 1915. She went missing on 22 August, 1916 after heading towards the Dutch island of Terschelling.
The submarine E38 reported seeing a number of German warships in the vicinity, and splashes suggesting that they were laying depth charges. The commander of the E16 at the time of her sinking was Lieutenant-Commander Kenneth Duff-Dunbar, heir to the Dunbar title and a 15th century castle, Ackergill Tower, in Wick

They were the sons of the Rev&Mrs TDMiller who retired from Kirkurd to Perth.Their grandfather was the Head of Perth Academy,They are commemorated by a stained glass window and accompanying plaque in St Johns Kirk in Perth.
