The cemetery is very interesting in that it contains the graves of 16 air crew who perished in the Second World War. (mostly Dominion aircrew)
Charterhall RAF base was close by.

The Scotsman - Tuesday, 4th January 1921, page 5

    WAR MEMORIALS

    FOGO. — The war memorial which has been erected at Fogo takes the form of a lichgate at the entrance of the Churchyard, on which is placed a handsome tablet of Peterhead granite, bearing the names of 10 officers and men belonging to the parish who fell in the war. The memorial has been unveiled by Lady Edith Trotter, Charterhall. Capt. C. B. Balfour of Newton Don, Lord-Lieutenant of Berwickshire, gave a short address at the ceremony, after which the memorial was dedicated by Rev. Hugh Shirlaw, B.D., parish minister.

(Glasgow Herald 6th July 1915)
"... casualties among Berwickshire men who are serving with the 4th K.O.S.B. in the Dardanelles are reported... Private William Kinghorn, Bogend, Duns, died of wounds, son of Mr Peter Kinghorn. He was a rabbit catcher before joining the Territorials, and was 20 years of age."

All of the men are also named on the Fogo Parish Church Roll of Honour.

JOHN BLUMER, 2nd LIEUT. R.F.A.
(I have not been able to connect this man to this parish)
John Blumer – age 19 – Second Lieutenant, 283rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
John was educated at Aysgarth Grammar School in Wensleydale and at Uppingham School, Rutland. As a former Cadet in the Officer Training Corps he was commissioned in December 1914 and joined his Brigade in France in July 1916 but he was fatally wounded two months later.
Born 1897 Sunderland, County Durham. Son of the late Ada Graeme (Yule) Blumer (died 1912) and of William Blumer, shipbuilder, of 3 Gray Road, Sunderland.
Died of Wounds on 26 September 1916 and buried in Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery, Bray-Sur-Somme, France.


GEORGE GUTHRIE, PTE. K.O.S.B.
George Guthrie – age 32 – Private (25319) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1883 in Fogo. Son of Michael and Sarah (Anderson) Guthrie of Fogo.
Husband of Agnes Brown (Wylie) Guthrie of Sisterpath Waulkmill, Fogo who he married in 1912 in Fogo.
Killed in Action on 31 July 1917 and buried in Potijze Chateau Grounds Cemetery, Belgium.


WILLIAM KINGHORN, PTE. K.O.S.B.
William Kinghorn – age 20 – Private (7126) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a rabbit-catcher when he and his friend Arthur Lorimer (see below) enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was fatally wounded two weeks later and died in the 11th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1895 in Fogo as William Anderson Kinghorn. Son of Peter and Margaret Forret (Anderson) Kinghorn of Bogend, Fogo.
Died of Wounds on 21 June 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

ARTHUR A. LORIMER, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Arthur Alexander Lorimer – age 20 – Private (7077) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Arthur was employed as a roadman by the Middle District Committee of the County Council when he and his friend William Kinghorn (see above) enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of Alexander and Rebecca (Smart) Lorimer of Bogend, Fogo.

ALEX. C. PURVES, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Alexander Cowe Purves – age 20 – Private (7265) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of John and Margaret (Cowe) Purves of Fogomuir, Charterhall, Fogo.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


JOHN D. SHIELL, PTE. GORDON HIGHLANDERS.
John Dodds Shiell – age 27 – Private (S/6818) 9th Battalion (Pioneer) Gordon Highlanders.
John was a ploughman at Bogend Farm, Fogo when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 and served at Loos. He was wounded by a shell on the Somme in October 1916. John suffered multiple wounds in March 1918 and died a week later in the 2nd Australian General Hospital at Wimereux.
Born 1889 at Butterdean Farm, Grantshouse, Oldhamstocks, Berwickshire.
Son of the late Margaret (Dodds) Shiell (died 1893) and of William Shiell of Blackburn, Grantshouse.
Died of Wounds on 31 March 1918 and buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Grantshouse UF Church Roll of Honour, on the Cockburnspath Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire and on the Cockburnspath Parish Church Roll of Honour.

GEORGE F. THOMSON, PTE. A.&S. HIGHLANDERS.
Note: all records have THOMPSON
George Frederick Thompson – age 30 – Private (S/5577) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
George was a motor engineer at Eskbank, Midlothian when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with the 12th Argylls in September 1915 but he was wounded a month later and after treatment in the 10th General Hospital in Rouen he was posted to the 10th Battalion in November. George was killed near Ypres in Belgium and was buried in Paratonniers Farm French Cemetery in Boesinghe and was re-interred in September 1920.
Born 1887 in Fogo as Thompson. Son of William Thompson, Estate Overseer at Charterhall, Fogo and of Mary (Copland) Thompson.
Killed in Action on 2 March 1918 and buried in New Irish Farm Cemetery, Belgium.


EDWARD H. TROTTER, D.S.O. LT.-COL. GRENADIER GUARDS.
Edward Henry Trotter, Distinguished Service Order – age 44 – Lieutenant Colonel, Grenadier Guards commanding the 18th Battalion (2nd City) The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
Edward joined the Grenadier Guards from the Royal Scots Militia in June 1893 and served in the Sudan in 1898 and in the South African Wars where, as a Captain in the City of London Imperial Volunteers, he was awarded a DSO in September 1901. He was given command of the 18th The King's and landed with them at Boulogne in November 1915. The battalion suffered badly on the first day of the 1916 battle of the Somme and Edward was visiting the Brigade Headquarters to discuss its redeployment when he was fatally wounded by a shell.
Born 1872 in Kensington, London. Son of the late Major General Sir Henry Trotter, G.C.V.O. of Mortonhall, Midlothian and of Charterhall, Fogo (died 1905) and of the late the Hon. Eva (Gifford) Lady Trotter (died April 1915) of Sloan Street, London.
Died of Wounds on 8 July 1916 and buried in Peronne Road Cemetery, Maricourt, France.

and his brother

REGINALD B. TROTTER, CAPT. CAMERON HIGHLANDERS.

Reginald Baird Trotter – age 41 – Captain, 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Reginald joined the Camerons from the Royal Scots Militia in August 1899 and served with the 1st Camerons in the South African War in 1900. He was promoted to Captain in March 1910 and was serving with the 2nd Camerons in India in 1911. The battalion returned to England in November 1914 and landed at Le Havre in December.
Born 1874 in Kensington, London. Son of the late Major General Sir Henry Trotter, G.C.V.O. of Mortonhall, Midlothian and of Charterhall, Fogo (died 1905) and of the late the Hon. Eva (Gifford) Lady Trotter (died April 1915) of Sloan Street, London. (Source: Probate of wills)
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
The brothers are also named on the Episcopal Christ Church in Duns, on the Mortonhall Golf Club memorial, on the New Club memorial in Edinburgh and on the Cirencester War Memorial in Gloucestershire.
(in 1881 the family were living at Golden Farm Lodge, Cirencester and in 1891 they were at the King's Head Hotel in Dyer Street, Cirencester)


JAMES YULE, PTE. SCOTS GUARDS.
James Yule – age 40 – Private (5653) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
In 1911 James was living with his parents at Crunklaw Farm Cottage near Fogo. He may have been a reservist as he joined his battalion in France two weeks after they had landed at Le Havre in August 1914. James was killed two months later at Ypres.
Born 1874 in Abbey St. Bathans as James Aikman Yule. Son of the late James Hunter Yule (died 1911) Janet (Aikman) Yule of Caldra Farm, Fogo.
Missing in Action on 29 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Abbey St. Bathans Parish War Memorial together with his brother William George Yule, Private (19084) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers who died on 30 November 1917.
