Forfar - Angus District

The Forfar war memorial is a high castellated tower built of rustic blocks of local stone and sandstone quoins. It stands in the park behind the baths on Uplour Road.
The tablet above the door bears the inscription:
'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'
ERECTED IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF FORFAR AND
DISTRICT WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 18

That is a cracking memorial.
It reminds me of the Stornoway War Memorial in its sheer scale.

Athough there are a lot of differences it reminded me of the Stornoway memorial

And the Hector MacDonald memorial in Dingwall

This image was taken from the Clan Davidson website.

Are they all based on a particular tower?

It looks like it struck both myself and Derek at the same time that it looks like Stornoway!

I'd read before that the Brora WM was based on the Hector MacDonald memorial but comparing this image it is not as similar as the others.

Thanks Mark. I checked the Angus Doors Open Day leaflet, see here:

http://www.angus.gov.uk/doorsopen/DOD2009.pdf

And it's not included this year.

Thanks

David Low Thom has been listed by CWGC as a 'priority' case in their search for living decendents of those who fell at Fromelles (Pheasant Wood)

One of eight Scots on the list here http://www.cwgc.org/fromelles/?page=english/the-project/casualty_lists

A summer works programme is planned for Balmashanner war memorial in Forfar.

Balmashanner War Memorial

The 1921 monument, which overlooks the town from the south, was previously identified as being in need of around £90,000 of repair work, including conservation of the turret.

Under a plan due to get under way in late summer or early autumn, the C-listed structure is scheduled to undergo a project which will see the bartisan tied to the main tower with galvanised metal straps.

Other conservation measures and landscaping are included in a proposal for which Angus Council has lodged an application for listed building consent.

Forfar Community Council said it is "heartened" by the plan.

PEARSON, JOSEPH. Lance-Corporal. Canadians France. Killed in action August, 1917.

I think this mans forename is actually John.
He is in the Arbroath Roll of Honour, it states his father resided in Forfar and he himself had worked in a solicitors office there before going to Canada. The only link to Arbroath seems to be that his sister lived there.
He was 33 years old.

Name: PEARSON, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: Canadian
Rank: Lance Corporal
Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment)
Unit Text: 28th Bn.
Date of Death: 22/08/1917
Service No: 429133
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Memorial: VIMY MEMORIAL

Cheers,
Derek.
