I notice that the last two casualties on this small memorial both died on the same date within days of the cessation of hostilities..

Charles Finlay and William McGregor were both in the 13th btn Black Watch, does anyone know what the likely battle or event it was that may have caused their deaths?

Derek.

Spanish Flu?

If I remember correctly in the Kirsty Wark 'Who Do You Think You Are' programme her great uncle died of Spanish Flu about two weeks after the Armistice while he was still in France.

Unlike many late 1918 deaths it wasn't Spanish Flu.

Checking the war return for Charles Finlay he was "Killed in Action".
Further checking shows that on the 4th of November 1918 there were 36 casualties of the 13th Btn Black Watch, according to SNWM.

It appears the 13th Btn were attached to the 50th (Northumbrian) Division and fought at the Battle of Sambre on the 4th of November 1918.

Cheers,
Derek
