UKNIWM Ref: 44413

Now located in the entrance to St Cuthbert’s (Kirkcudbright Parish Church) at OS Map Ref NX 684 510. During the Great War, the church commemorated was the United Free and became St Mary’s before WW2, it was later closed and converted into flats and the memorial moved to the parish church.

I was checking this memorial for someone else when I noticed the Grant brothers, Adam and John are listed here. Their parents were both from Sutherland. John Grant, from Dornoch, was a Tailor and Clothier and with his wife Jane (m.s. Sutherland), from Clyne, had a business in Bridge St. Kirkcudbright. This may be why the boys enlisted in the A&SH. However when they died (in the same action) they were both Corporals in the 2nd HLI. Note their Service Numbers

Name: GRANT, ADAM
Initials: A
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Corporal
Regiment/Service: Highland Light Infantry
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 28/04/1917
Service No: 35144
Additional information: Son of the late John Grant, of 5, Bridge St., Kirkcudbright.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Bay 8.
Memorial: ARRAS MEMORIAL

Name: GRANT, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Corporal
Regiment/Service: Highland Light Infantry
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 28/04/1917
Service No: 35143
Additional information: Son of the late John Grant, of 5, Bridge St., Kirkcudbright. Came from Fort William, Ontario, Canada, to enlist.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Bay 8.
Memorial: ARRAS MEMORIAL

According to the Stewartry Roll of Honour they enlisted early 1916 in the 13th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and both had had service with the Galloway Rifles.
Adam, who was 41 when he was killed, also served in South Africa.

The Scotsman, Monday, 28 June 1920:

Yesterday a brass memorial was unveiled in Kirkcudbright United Free Church to thirty men connected with the congregation, who fell in the war. The unveiling ceremony was performed by Provost Miller, and the sermon was preached by the Rev. G. J. Jeffrey.
