Full A-Z listing of all casualties in the 2nd Boer War: Killed, wounded, injured, etc.
I also have a number of other Boer War resources, so list the details of who you want me to look up and I'll see what I can track down for you.

Hi David
Would appreciate a look up for the following man.
John McInnes Born Aberfeldy 13/4/1884
In WW1 he was serving as L/Cpl #120 1st Black Watch Died 26/10/1914 Ypres.
I haven't found much on this man and was wondering if perhaps he had fought in Boer war.
Thanks Mike |

Mike,
Two possibles for you:
1. J McInnes, Lance-Corporal 6279 wounded at Magersfontein, 11/12/1899 - 1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
2. J McInnes, Private 3648 wounded at Paardeberg 18/02/1900 - 2nd Black Watch.
There is no guarantee that either of these is your man since he may have served and not been wounded/injured and therefore woudln't be on the casualty roll.
I have the Black Watch medal Roll for the Queens South Africa Medal somewhere in this study - I'll find it and check for your man. |

I have another candidate for you.
"The Military History of Perthshire 1899-1902" has the following man listed:
9160. Pte McInnes, John (Aberfeldy). 5th Volunteer Battalion Black Watch. Served in South African War with 3rd Volunteer Service Company, 1902 (queen's Medal, with clasps "cape Colony", "Orange Free State", and "South Africe 1902"). (259)
The number 259 in brackets refers to this:

David. That's fantastic. I will check Scotlands people again but I think there was only one John McInnes born in Aberfeldy at that time. Will check again.
Well done many thanks Mike |

Have just checked Scotlands People. One John McInnes born in Aberfeldy between 1855-1900. Am pretty sure this is the man. Will do a bit more digging to see if can verify. Meanwhile David, you have made my day.

Hi David,
I am looking for information on Private Patrick Lamont, 7696, 2nd Battalion Black Watch, died on 28 Jan 1902 at Bloemfontein. He was the son of Thomas and Catherine Lamont and was born in Dunfermline, Fife, in 1882.
I know he is listed on the "died from Disease" plate of the memorial.
He is buried in Bloemfontein (Waverley Rd) Cemetery. Any photo's about?
Cheers,
Murray |

Murray,
I'm afraid I don't have much more information than you already have. The casualty roll shows he died of disease.
The Black Watch medal Roll shows him on the supplementary list as P LAMOND and there are no marks in the clasps part of the roll, so I would assume that he received the Queens South Africa Medal with no clasps. There is a box marked "Entitled to King;s Medal" and some of the entries have it marked as "No" - his does not so I can only assume he was eligible for the KSA as well.
I checked "In Memoriam" which sometimes gives additional information. It notes that he is commemorated on the main memorial at the cemetery, so I don't think there's an individual marker for him. It also lists that he was Roman Catholic - I don't know the original source of that information.
Sorry, I couldn't find any more information for you.

I should also have said - I wasn't able to find a photo of him. The only sources of photos of Boer War period soldiers are really for Angus, Perthshire, and some for Kirkcaldy and District.
Other than that, you might try local newspapers but at that time they didn't seem to publish a lot of photographs. |

I have that as well and will use it should anyone request information on an officer.
I have rather a large number of Boer War resources available - too many to list here! |
