I'm stretching it a bit here, but I wonder if he was any relation to the actor John Laurie who was born in Dumfries in 1897?

Well John Paton Laurie (actor) in 1901 was living with his family at 14 St Andrews Street whereas Thomas Edwards Laurie was living with his mother described as head of family but married (!) at 86 Queen Street. Any family connection would have to be at least one generation further back. Good guess though, the church with the memorial to Thomas is only a few minutes walk from the Academy that John attended.
