Hopetoun Church War Memorial
Greenside Parish Church
Regent Road
Edinburgh

Located within the entrance hall to Greenside Parish Church there are two photographs of the war memorials of the former Hopetoun Church.

I think this is the location of the former church but I will need to confirm it. There has been a lot of redevelopment on McDonald Road recently but one of Greenside's Parishoners described it as being at this location.

Hopetoun Church was formed in 1962 by the union of St James' Church and Guthrie Memorial and was united with Greenside Church in 1974. It would not have had a war memorial for Hopetoun Church as such and there are already postings for the separate memorials for St James' and Guthrie Memorial. It used the buildings of the former St James' Church on Mcdonald Road and I think that the photograph is of that site.

I think that the Memorial shown would have come from a different group of churches which came into Greenside through a later union between Greenside and Hillside (in 1978) Hillside was formed in 1956 through a union between Lady Glenorchy's North and Barony & St James' Place Church. Since whereabouts of the memorial for Lady Glenorchy's North is already known (see separate posting) it seems probable that the memorial shown came from the Barony & St James Place Church which was located located at the corner of Albany Street and Broughton St. That church was itself the result of a union in 1933 and from 1900 to 1929 would have been known as St Mary's United Free Church. I think it is probable that it was the memorial for St Mary's UF/Barony rather than St James' Place church but can't prove this.
