Glasgow Royal Infirmary, 84 Castle Street, Glasgow G4 0SF

OS Grid Ref: NS 601656

Designed by Robert and James Adam, the original Royal Infirmary building was opened in December 1794. The infirmary was built beside Glasgow Cathedral on land that held the ruins of the Bishop's Castle, which dated from at least the 13th century but had been allowed to fall into disrepair. A Royal Charter was obtained in 1791 that granted the Crown-owned land to the hospital. The original Adams building had five floors (one underground) holding eight wards (giving the hospital just over a hundred beds) and a circular operating room on the fourth floor with a glazed dome ceiling.

The Memorials are located in the main building, enclosed by the security guard’s office.

From The Scotsman 08 July 1921.

    WAR MEMORIALS

GLASGOW ROYAL INFIRMARY.— The unveiling of a war memorial tablet in the form of a roll of honour in the Central Hall of the Templeton Block of Glasgow Royal Infirmary was a quietly impressive ceremony. Mr James Macfarlane presided, and called upon Mr J. H. Pringle, the senior surgeon, who had been chosen by the managers to perform the unveiling ceremony. Mr J. H. Pringle said that some of the fourteen whose names were inscribed on the tablet had died in action, some as the result of wounds and a number as the result of injuries contracted on service. The majority were members of the Royal Army Medical Corps, but four were members of the nursing staff. A prayer of dedication was offered by the Rev. Dr James McGibbon, of the Cathedral. The tablet is of cast bronze with burnished letters.

I visited yesterday and the memorials were moved about a year ago from the security office (Centre Block - the original main entrance).

The bronze plaque is now opposite the security office in a much better position.

The two paper rolls of honour were moved elsewhere - current location not known.
