Alice Docherty Smith died in 1949 and so is outwith the scope for commemoration by CWGC.
You have to wonder why she is on the memorial if her service was during WW2. Maybe the cause of death would clarify further. _________________ Jim

Glyn Ritchie is listed on the WW2 panel of the Milngavie memorial.
Woops! My mistake. The only Glyn I know is a woman, so Mr Ritchie was known by a middle name and not his forname.
Sorry folks
Derek.

From The Herald
"Fighters could not engage the enemy during Clydebank Blitz
I am bemused by Frank Gallagher’s solution to the defence of Clydebank during the Blitz of 1941 (Letters, September 7). He confesses to having an interest in Spitfires yet this aircraft was a day fighter; the Clydebank Blitz was at night.
The problems of operating the early Spitfires at night are well known. The glare from the exhaust stubs destroyed the pilot’s night vision.
Nevertheless, if he had looked up a bit higher he would have seen Spitfires of 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron based at Prestwick and recently returned from highly successful operations in the Battle of Britain. Bristol Blenheim night fighters from 600 Squadron were also deployed.
The problem at Clydebank was the employment of a strategy known as “Fighter Night”, which created a buffer zone between the anti-aircraft guns and friendly aircraft.
Intercepting aircraft were given specific heights and ordered not to deviate . The Luftwaffe came through in the buffer zone. Had someone talked?
The pilots of 602 Squadron could only watch in frustration as Clydebank was destroyed.
Imagine being Squadron Leader Sandy Johnstone, looking down on the carnage from 22,000ft, knowing his family was in Kelvinside, or Flight Lieutenant Glyn Ritchie, whose family was in Milngavie.
Glyn Ritchie subsequently made the supreme sacrifice four months later.
P G Traynor, 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron RAuxAF Museum, 518 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. "

|
|
After my last faux pas I thought I'd run this past folk first!
On Langholm WW2 is listed T.O. Milne Home, I. M.W.R.N.S.
I think this is a female casualty but I haven't been able to identify them on CWGC.
I'm don't know what the rank T.O. stands for. I thought it said W.R.N.S. but I think the M is before it and not part of their name, making it M.W.R.N.S.
Anyone able to clear this up?
now Cleared up!
Cheers,
Derek.
