Private 35257 James McIver, Hampshire Regiment. SWMP shows him listed on Balmaghie War Memorial (as McIvor).

Stewartry RoH:
McIver, Private James, Bridge-of-Dee. Enlisted January 1917, Hants Regiment. Served on Transport between Southampton and Havre. Died after discharge, 3rd October 1918.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser, 4 Oct 1918:
M'Iver.—On the 3rd instant, suddenly, at Bridge-of-Dee, James M'Iver, aged 42 years, beloved husband of Ada M'Iver.—R.I.P.

Part of his service file has survived and is in WO 364. Quite an interesting little file - a butler, he enlisted in Paris (haven't seen that before) and was 'Employed with the Military Forwarding Party from Southampton to France', which ties in with his entry in the county RoH. His file states he was discharged in Nov 1917 with 'V.D.H' - valvular disease of the heart.

His death certificate lists him as 'Butler & Valet, Private Hampshire Regiment/discharged'. Cause of death 'Chronic Nephritis Several Months, Cardiac Valvular Disease'

I can't find him on the CWGC. Could others please check in case I have missed him. Since his cause of death and reason for discharge match, I'm sure he will have a strong case to be commemorated.

Am checking further but it looks as if he is not listed on CWGC. If you want me to progress it send me on the Obit, DC, etc by e-mail for checking. I can get the file.
If we can prove he is the same man from the various items it should proceed.

He is not on the SNWM Roll either.

Jim, thank you for that - I will email you death certificate and notice of death. There should be no problem with proving he is the same man; full details of his family are given in his file. His wife's details match the death certificate which is witnessed by his daughter, Goldie, whose (unusual) name is also stated in his service file.

Jim - for information (I've already e-mailed this to Stuart)
James is buried with his wife Ada in Balmaghie Parish Churchyard.

for background - James, a Butler, and Ada, a Cook, both at Dildawn House, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire married in the RC Church, Castle Douglas, Kelton on 31 May May 1902.
His parents (both Deceased) Peter McIver (a Police Constable) and Margaret Goldie. A witness was Peter McIver - a brother?

Goldie was a son, not a daughter. I have some concerns that the discharge was due to a condition aggravated, but not caused, by ordinary military service. Still checking.

Hi Jim,

I had believed (perhaps mistakenly) from reading posts on the GWF that the MoD were satisfied as long as the cause of death matched the reason for discharge i.e. death was a consequence of war service, whether directly attributable or aggravated.

Fingers crossed for a favourable outcome.

Ken, thank you very much for taking the time to search for the McIver plot in Balmaghie Parish Churchyard and for the other details you sent via email.

Your belief is correct but I had a concern initially on proof, as there is nothing on the DC to link the illness back to his service eg. Cardiac Valvular Disease, 9 months duration. He should be fine.

235257 Pte. James McIver, Hampshire Regiment (Depot) has been forwarded as a case, on Stuart's behalf, to CWGC / MOD as a non comm post discharge death ( Chronic Nephritis and Cardiac Valvular Disease) due to a service related cause. His details are now in the system.

It is known that he is detailed on a family headstone at Balmaghie Parish Churchyard, but further checks are being made.
Will update when further details available.
