I would have a small wager that there is a spelling mistake of his third name on CWGC. A family name is HATHORN so I think that is more likely than Hawthorn.

From my notes on the parish war memorial:

HERBERT E. JOHNSTON STEWART - CAPTAIN HLI.
Herbert Eustace Hathorn Johnston-Stewart, Captain 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 34.
Born 1880 in Glasserton. Son of Robert Hathorn Johnston-Stewart and of Ann Murray (Maxwell) Johnston-Stewart.
Husband of Violet (Corse-Scott) Johnston-Stewart of Synton, Hawick who he married in 1912 in Edinburgh.
Gazetted as a 2nd Lt. in April 1900, Herbert served with the Imperial Mounted Infantry in the South African War.
Missing in action 17 May 1915 and named on Le Touret Memorial, France and on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

The Battle of Festubert, 15 - 25 May 1915.
On 17 May at 10.00am the attacking units of 2nd Division's 6th Brigade supported by the 2nd Highland Light Infantry of the 5th Brigade ran into heavy machine-gun fire from their left front.

He's also named on the memorial in Bothwell Parish Church. There is also a biographical note about him at page 111 in the Bothwell Historical Society's booklet on those who fell in the war: http://bothwellhistoricalsociety.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/LWF.pdf
