This was the FIRST war memorial for the Parish of Durisdeer, and was built by Beattie & Co, Carlisle. Ordered on 26/2/1919, log book No 2661 to cost £276 10/-, by Thomas Goodfellow. Sec and Treasurer of Durisdeer War Committee, from Encochbank, Durisdeer. Durisdeer War Committee fell out about site and names and order was cancelled, new committee formed in Dec 1920; then WM was reordered on 12/5/1921 and erected 26/10/1921and unveiled on 30/10/1921. The memorial was sent from Carlisle to Durisdeer by train and the carriage cost £19.3s.6d., and was sent to A, Carruthers, Builder, in Thornhill - who made the 8 steps; the concrete foundation which memorial placed ;and erected the memorial.
The WM has the old spelling of 'Durrisdeer' and dated 1914-1919.
It was unveiled by Mr. John Vernon.
From Jan 1921 parishioners still unhappy about site and names and a second committee forms; no records of meetings; and they unveiled a second war memorial outside Durisdeer Church on 13/11/1921, refer to site under 'Durisdeer Village'.
Information collected when visted Beattie & Co, Carlisle in July 2010.
Teddy.

John Shanks born in Dumfries in 1893, was my great uncle. He died on the HMS Hampshire when the ship hit a mine off the coast of the Orkneys. He is commemorated on the War Memorial at Southsea in Hampshire, where I live. I can post a photo if anyone is interested. Can anyone help with a photo of John? Thanks Sherri

John was born on 5/12/1893 at Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire and his mother was Jane Jardine, no father registered; he stayed in Durisdeer and went to the Durideer School. When John killed in 1916 his mother married to Mr Shanks (no record of marriage date) and staying at Noblehill Dumfries.
John is commemroated on 'Durisdeer School Roll of Honour' which was unveiled in 1922 and when school closed in 1974 moved into Durisdeer Church. He is commemorated on WM at Dumfries town WM at St Johns. He is on SNMW and the cwgc see him at Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
He was receorded in book in 1917, by James Hendrie - 'Letters of a Durisdeer Soldier' which 'spoons' show in previous postings. In November 2011 -Gladys Cuttle - has for the 5th book of Nithsdale WM's -
'Letters of a Durisdeer Soldier, James Hendrie 1889-1916, with Additions'
cost is £15.00 each plus £2.00 P&P. To obtain send PM with details to 'Teddy'
Intersting to note on the same ship - HMS Hampshire' also killed was another John Shanks - Chief Engine Room Artifcer 2nd Class, Service No 270194, John Shanks 1875-1916 born in Glasgow.

Just looked at my file - should have looked before and see that 'The John Shanks born in Sanquhar on 1893 is not your great uncle'.
Your great uncle is the second John Shanks; John born 19/7/1875 in Glasgow his father was Robert Shanks and mother Ann Littlejohn.
John married Minnie Shanks, a native of Edinburgh and in 1916 down as staying at 46 Pains Road, Southsea, Portsmouth; hence reason why on your Southsea WM. Service No as in above posting along with on these details; but of course no photo.

When Minid 14 - saying has John Shanks on WM at Southsea, Hampshire, one would think John Shanks No 270194 married to Minnie who stayed at 46 Pains Road would have been Great Uncle. What Minid 14 - did not say that WM talking about is the 'Portsmouth Naval Memorial' which has these two men on - Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class No 270194 on grave ref 15; and Stoker 1st Class No K/27978 on grave ref 19.
Minid14- confirmed from the family tree that great uncle is in fact John Shanks born in 1893 and on Portsmouth Naval Memorial grave ref 19 - and who is from parish of Durisdeer and commemorated on the Durisdeer School roll of honour which was unveiled in 1922.
