GW

Many thanks for posting these photographs. I've been wanting to see what this memorial looks like for some time.

Brass memorials in dark churches are very difficult to photograph so you've done a pretty good job here.

Regards

Adam

CAPT LORNE CAMPBELL Canadians

I believe that Captain Campbell died in Canada after the war. He is also listed on the Rosehall War Memorial.

Believe it or not typing Tigaroenggoe 1942 into Google gives this:

http://www.rchs.uhi.ac.uk/communit/p37/ht/rs/WW2%20Records/WW2%20Davidson%20to%20Fraser.html

Surname Fraser
Forename(s) Adam Sutherland
Rank Not stated
Regiment Dutch Army
Home Address 18 Downie Terrace, Corstorphine, Edinburgh, ex-Knockbreck, Tain

EXTRACT FROM RJ:

FRASER - Official information has been received that Adam Sutherland Fraser, dearly beloved only son of the late Alexander Fraser, Knockbreck, Tain, Ross-shire, and Mrs Fraser, 18 Downie Terrace, Corstorphine, Edinburgh, is now presumed to have been killed in action with the Dutch Army at Tigaroenggoe, Sumatra, on 15th March, 1942. Deeply mourned.

I wonder if he was in some sort of Dutch East Indies Home Guard? In fact does the memorial say HG and not AG?

Thanks

Adam

Some "bits" extracted from http://www.reocities.com/dutcheastindies/north_sumatra.html

KNIL (Royal Netherlands East Indian Army).
"units in Middle and Northern Sumatra were a mixture of Militia, Home Guard, Conscript or Civilian volunteer formations."

"The rearguard held out until 1430, when Van de Lande received word of the main force reaching Tiga Roenggoe. Unfortunately, the Japanese got there first and the KNIL troops were dispersed by a hailstorm of fire. Several small groups tried to reach Kabandjahe through rough terrain, but all were captured. The Japanese later executed 25 European officers and troops on the 15th. " (March 1942)
