George Ralston Peddie Waddell is commemorated in Slamannan, Dunbar and Falkirk

He died at Germiston, Transvaal on 8th February 1901 aged 26 years. He was serving with 19th Coy. Imperial Yeomanry which was formed from the Lothian & Border Horse.

The first name on the memorial is Lieutenant Colonel William Henry Dick-Cunyngham VC

London Gazette, 18th October, 1881.

"William Henry Dick-Cunyngham, Captain, The Gordon Highlanders. Date of Act of Bravery; 13th December, 1879. For conspicuous gallantry and bravery displayed by him on the 13th December, 1879, at the attack on the Sherpur Pass, in Afghanistan, in having exposed himself to the full fire of the enemy, and by his example and encouragement rallied the men who, having been beaten back, were at the moment wavering at the top of the hill"

William Henry Dick Cunyngham, V.C., Lt. Col. 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, born 16.6.1851, mortally wounded at the defense of Ladysmith, Natal, South Africa,, Saturday 6th Jan, and died 7.1.1900

Coddington. — 2nd Lieut. Astur Bertrand Coddington, 1st
Batt. Essex Regt., was killed in action at Driefontein, March 10th, 1900. He was born in Oct., 1877, educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond, and entered the Essex Regt. in Feb., 1898. This officer's death is mentioned in the despatch of F.-M. Earl Roberts from Bloemfontein March 15th, 1900.

Dalyell. — Lieut. Charles William Parry Dalyell, Royal Garrison Artillery, died of enteric at Pretoria, Dec. 7th,. 1900. He was born in 1877, and educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond. He was fond of games and was in the College team for football and cricket. He entered the Royal Artillery Sept., 1897, being promoted lieut. in 1900. One of his Commanding Officers writing of him says " the service has lost a most promising officer."

Dick-Cunyngham. — Lieut.-Col. William Henry Dick-Cunyngham, V.C., commanding 2nd Batt. Gordon Highlanders, died Jan. 7th, 1900, from wounds received in action at Ladysmith on the previous day. He was mortally wounded by a stray bullet at 3,000 yards from the enemy. He was the fifth and youngest son of the late Sir William Hanmer Dick-Cunyngham, eighth baronet, of Prestonfield and Lambrughtoun, co. Ayr. Lieut.-Col. Dick-Cunyngham was born June, 1851, and educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond. He entered the 92nd Highlanders in 1872, was promoted lieut. 1S73, capt. 1S81, major 1S91, and lieut. -col. 1897. He served in the Afghan War, 1878-80, and was present on transport duty in the advance on Kandahar and Khelat-i-Gilzai under Sir Donald Stewart ; with the Thul Chotiali Force under Major -Gen. Biddulph (mentioned in despatches) ; under Earl (then Sir Frederick) Roberts in the Koorum Valley Field Force in the 92nd Gordon Highlanders, including the engagement at Ali Kheyl ; he also took part in the operations round Kabul, Dec, 1879, including the attack on the Sherpur Pass, being mentioned in despatches and awarded the V.C. He was with the Maidan Expedition in 1S80 as acting adjutant of a wing of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders, including the engagement at Charasiah, April 25th (mentioned in despatches) ; accompanied Earl Roberts in the famous march to Kandahar, and was present at the reconnaissance of Aug. 31st, and at the battle of Kandahar (mentioned in despatches, and received the medal with two clasps and bronze star). He was awarded the V.C. "for the conspicuous gallantry and coolness displayed by him on Dec. 13th, 1S79, at the attack on the Sherpur Pass in Afghanistan, in having exposed himself to the full fire of the enemy, and by his example and encouragement rallied the men, who, having been beaten back, were at the moment wavering at the top of the hill." He served in the Boer War, 1SS1, as adjutant of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders, and was subsequently D.A.A.G. in Bengal. He went to Natal from India in command of the 2nd Batt. Gordon Highlanders, and led them into action at Elandslaagte. He fell early in the charge, wounded by a bullet in the leg. A sergeant of his battalion writes concerning him that on this occasion " he lay and cheered on the men ; he tried to be up at the end of the charge, but could not manage it." He completely recovered from this wound, and returned to duty only to be again struck down, Jan. 6th, this time mortally. He was uncle to Sir William Dick-Cunyngham, the present baronet, and married in 1883, Helen, daughter of Mr. Samuel Wauchope, C.B. Lieut. -Col. Dick-Cunyngham is buried in the Town cemetery at Ladysmith. The Gordon Highlanders have erected a cairn to his memory on the spot where he fell.

Foulerton. — Major Alexander Francis Grant Foulerton,
1st Batt. Leinster Regt., died at Vrede Jan. 5th, 1901. He was born March, 1859, and educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond. He entered the 109th Foot from the Royal Aberdeenshire Highlanders Militia, Oct., 1880, being promoted lieut. July, 1881, capt. Sept., 1886, and major March, 1896. Major Foulerton served in the Sikkim Expedition, 1888, when he was in charge of the signallers, and received the medal with clasp. He was adjutant of Militia April, 1895, to April, 1900, when he was appointed second-in-command of his battalion, and joined it in South Africa, serving with it up to the time of his death.

Guthrie. — Lieut. David Ernest Guthrie, 39th Company I.Y., died of enteric at Mafeking Feb. 2nd, 1902. He was the son of David Guthrie, Esq., 9, Park Circus Place, Glasgow ; was born in Oct., 1870, and educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond (1885-8Cool. He was a good athlete, and when at Glenalmond was in the cricket, football, and shooting teams. Lieut. Guthrie was appointed to the 10th Batt. of the I.Y., May, 1901, and afterwards served with it up to his death.

Macaulay. — Lieut. Kenneth Zachary Pollock Macaulay, Loyal North Lancashire Regt., died at Middelburg, Transvaal, Jan. 30th, 1901, of wounds received in action three days previously. He was the second son of Col. C. E. Macaulay, 2, Cathedral Square, Glasgow, was born Sept., 1872, and educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond. He was fond of games and in his college football team. Lieut. Macaulay entered his regiment March, 1894, was promoted lieut. May, 1896, was A.D.C. to the G.O.C. Ceylon, June to Dec, 1899, when he proceeded to South Africa and was appointed railway staff officer, January, 1900, and staff capt. in March. He fell in the firing line of the rear guard retreating from Carolina, while " encouraging his men in the most gallant manner."

Motum. — 2nd Lieut. Hill Motum, Donegal Artillery, Southern Division R.A., died suddenly at Lindley, Jan. 14th, 1901. He was born July, 1880, and educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond. He entered the Donegal Artillery in Oct., 1900.

Murdoch. — Lieut. Archibald Jose Campbell Murdoch, 1st Batt. Cameron Highlanders, was killed in action at Xooitgedacht, Dec. 13th, 1900. He was born June, 1876, and educated at St. Paul's School and Trinity College, Glenalmond. He entered the Cameron Highlanders
from the 3rd Batt. West Riding Regt. May, 1897, being promoted lieut. Nov.. 1S98. He served in the Soudan campaign under Lord (then Sir Herbert) Kitchener, 1898, with the 1st battalion of his regiment, and was present at the battles of Atbara and Khartoum, receiving the British
medal and Khedive's medal with two clasps. Lieut. Murdoch had seen much service during the South African War at Heilbron, Vredeport, and other places, and when killed was in charge of a picquet of twenty-five men, of which six were killed and twelve wounded.
