Usher Memorial Window, Bedrule Church.

The memorial does not commemorate any one individual.
It seems to celebrate the victory of 1918.

Derek

Thanks for posting these memorials. I take it the Ushers were local landowners.

I always like the photographs of stained glass windows that are posted. You’ve got some very good shots here.

The window with the Navy figures is interesting. Are the figures with red cap bands Royal Marines? It makes them look a bit German to me.
I see they are wearing the 1914 leather pattern equipment and gaiters as well, a nice little detail you don’t often see.
If it is the victory of 1918 the window represents I wonder if this one depicts the raid on Zeebrugge? Perhaps the mounted figures represent Allenby’s campaign through Palestine and Syria?

Regards

Adam

Adam,
I can't guess at the symbolism of any of the images in the glass at all. I was interested to see the figures and I had a guess that Marines were represented.

The Ushers made their money from the whisky industry (the firm produced and marketed the very first blended whisky ever made in the form of Usher's Old Vatted Glenlivet) and their subsequent dramatic decline has been the subject of a television documentary in recent years. The Usher Hall in Edinburgh and Edinburgh University's Usher Health Institute were both gifted by the Usher family.
Basically I think that the Ushers great fortune and estates were put in the hands of the family's solicitors as the male heir to the line had some sort of learning difficulty. And soon afterwards the family went bankrupt. The family have been trying to gain compensation citing malpractise against the solicitors.
The current head of the line worked as a taxi driver in Jedburgh and sometimes worked in the ice-cream van which sits on top of the Carter Bar in the summer.
