Now that we have been running for nearly two years there is a little of bit of forum administration to be done.

For example there are some threads out there where we need photographs. We may not have photographs of the name panels or even of the memorial itself. We may need up to date photographs as well.

Other threads might not have a location, Ordnance Survey reference or a UKNIWM entry.

We will also start adding unveiling details so if they haven’t been posted we’ll list them here.

There will probably be other things needing some attention which I haven’t thought of but will be listed here too.

We will start making up a list here covering all this area’s memorials, civic, church, regimental etc. If we come across something that will need actioned the Mods. can add it to this list. If you see something that needs updated please post in this thread and we can update the list.

Edinburgh Provincial Training Centre Memorial in Moray House Quad, Holyrood. - Limited access to Quad. Now done

James Clark School, St Leonard's Crag.
Named after Lt Col James Clark 9th A&SH, kia 1915. Clark was a former Chairman of Edinburgh School Board.
School now converted to flats. Apart from the School itself being a memorial, a bronze and marble memorial to Col Clark was unveiled there in 1920.

Cramond Civic Memorial, Location: Cramond Kirk. Now done

Portobello United Reform Church
Historic Scotland lists a Great War Memorial in this church.

I've got a list of 87 Church of Scotland churches currently open in Edinburgh. Quite a few of them have been the result of unions and transportations over the years so it's a bit of a guddle sorting out the churches from the 1920s from the churches of today.
We've got a few on the forum already but I'll start contacting the others to see if they can help us.

Deal to build flats saves school facing demolition

A VICTORIAN school building has been saved from demolition after being sold to a housing developer.

The former Niddrie Mill Primary, on Niddrie Mains Road, will be turned into 12 flats, with a further 43 homes to the side and back of the building.

The development of the old school originally formed part of developer Parc's 15-year masterplan to transform the Craigmillar area with new housing, schools and public spaces.

Despite gaining planning permission for the conversion of the building, it later emerged that Parc could not afford to undertake the work and demolition seemed the most likely option, given the rapidly deteriorating condition of the building.

However, a report by Dave Anderson, director of city development for the council, reveals that a new deal has been struck with property development company New City Vision, which has bought the school for £860,000. The proceeds of the sale will be reinvested into the regeneration of Craigmillar.

The news will come as a relief to local community members, who have been fighting for months to save the building.

Portobello and Craigmillar councillor Mike Bridgman said: "It's good to see that the building is being retained.

"If it's going to be developed in the manner in which it was supposed to be previously, then that's great news."

Niddrie Mill Primary, which closed in 2008 to make way for a £16 million joint-campus school with St Francis Primary, has been plagued by vandalism while standing empty.

In March 2009, a huge blaze started deliberately destroyed two 1970s buildings to the rear.

Demolition looked the most likely option as the council admitted it would not be able to afford the costs of securing the building long term.

Campaigners looked into getting the building listed by Historic Scotland. They previously stated the school was one of the last remaining buildings built from Niddrie brick, however, council officials have confirmed that it is in fact made from Portobello brick.

The new homes within the building will be a mix of one, two and three-bedroom flats.

The Wauchope Memorial Cross, situated at the front of the building, will be kept.

Councillor Tom Buchanan, economic development leader, said: "Thanks to direct action by Parc in conjunction with New City Vision, this important building has been saved for posterity. This development will also create much-needed new homes, as well as preserving the war memorial at the front of the property."

I received the following information relating to St Cuthbert's Episcopal church, Colinton.
"The only memorial I know of is the Eagle lectern given by Ralph Wheatley in memory of his son who died in World War 1. The archive has a list of those who served in the forces there will be another list of names which are read out on Remembrance Sunday. Tthe group may be interested in this as an informal memorial. "
I will not be able to go there for a good while so if anyone else wants to pursue it feel free.

I'll see if I can get a photo of the lectern, and maybe see the roll of honour. The church is less than a mile from home for me.

There is a roll of honour in Roseburn Primary School near Murrayfield in Edinburgh which we haven't got recorded yet.

Edinburgh Evening News Sat 24th Oct 2015 reports a damaged war memorial hidden in a cupboard of a five star hotel for more than 30 years is being restored to its former glory.

Yes, it's the Caledonian Hotel roll of honour. It should be on display in a public part of the hotel by the end of the year.
