This memorial sits between Auchinleck Parish Church and the Boswell Mausoleum on the B7036. It is at Map Ref. NS 552216

One of the panels has two names from the Falkland's War.

The bottom panel reads

I note that the first world war had names by rank and then alphabetically whereas the second world war names are in strict alphabetical order which reflects the changes to society.

The Glasgow Herald, Friday, 5th January, 1917.
"Deaths on Service.
CLARK.- On the 24th December (of wounds received in action), Private William Clark, Royal Scots, aged 20 years, younger son of the late John Clark, Waterside, Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire, and of Mrs Watson, Glenside, Auchinleck, Ayrshire." (a murky print - best guess at age and some words.)

Not listed Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire.

Born 1896 at Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Mary Clark of Waterside, Crossmichael.
Died of Wounds – 24 December 1916.
There is a family gravestone in Crossmichael Churchyard

Left farming in the Girvan area and came to Auchinleck
to work in the pits.

Normal Tilly was born in Stranraer around 1886, and moved to Auchinleck around 1907.

Additional Information: Son of Andrew Paton, J.P., and Margaret Paton.
Born in Auchinleck.

63803 Cpl. James R. Paton became ill with sciatica in Salonica, around August 1915.
His condition got worse "and finally developed into inflammation of the bone".
He was hospitalized in Malta for some time, and then shipped back to London about 5 weeks before he died.

William Clark was born in Auchinleck in 1886.
He’s listed as a 4 year-old boy in the 1891 census for Auchinleck,
and in the 1901 census he’s 14 years old.
In the 1911 census for Auchinleck he’s listed as a
24 year-old coal miner, living in his parents household
at Hayfield, Auchinleck.

William Clark is ranked as a Corporal on the Auchinleck War Memorial,
and on the Auchinleck Roll of Honour which appeared in the
Cumnock Chronicle in February,1915,
but according to the Rolls of Honour in the
Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh,
and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission,
he was a Private.

Abraham Yates was born in Dalmellington in 1892. His father was English and his mother was from Cumnock.
The family moved to Auchinleck when Abraham was about 8 years old.
The family is listed in the 1901 census as living at Greenock Mains(Templetoun) Auchinleck, and in the 1911 census they’re in Helenslea, Auchinleck.

Additional Information: Son of Samuel and Annie Macdonald Johnstone, of
Coatbridge, Lanarkshire;
husband of Jemima Johnstone, of Garronhill,
Muirkirk, Ayrshire.

Donald Johnstone became attendant at the Mines Rescue Station in Auchinleck in 1913. Previous to that, he was a postman in Muirkirk.
His Majesty's Hospital Ship SALTA was sunk by a German mine on 10th.April,1917 while returning to Le Havre to pick up wounded.
