Regarding Gunner Kenneth Smith. He died as a prisoner of the Japanese.
He was aboard the Suez Maru along with 640 other POW's which was sunk by the US submarine Bonefish. Although approximately 250 men managed to get out of the hold, they were subsequently massacred by the Japanese escort vessel.
