The "Craigneuk War Memorial Group" have received £30,000 to add name panels to the towns war memorial

From article..."CRAIGNEUK War Memorial Group have been presented with a cheque for £30,000 – which will now go towards upgrading the cenotaph.

The cash came from the Environmental Key Fund and Wishaw councillor John Pentland handed over the cheque to volunteers.

Situated outside Craigneuk Library, the cenotaph does not have the names of the fallen, but Craigneuk War Memorial Group have tracked down the records of every person from the area who died during the two World Wars and later conflicts.

They now hope to add the names to the memorial. A special panel will be reserved for Victoria Cross holder William Clamp who, although born in Motherwell, was educated at Craigneuk Public School. He was killed when he rushed a machine-gun post in October 1917 at Poelcapelle in Belgium, capturing 20 prisoners before being cut down by a sniper.

Patricia Tait, secretary of Craigneuk War Memorial Group, said: “The £30,000 we received from the Environmental Key Fund will make a vital contribution in helping us to pay tribute to the fallen from the World Wars.

“The memorial is a real focal point for the local community and allows people to pay their respects. We’ve had lots of great feedback on our plans. Lots of children have been saying to us that they will be able to find their great-granddad’s name inscribed on the cenotaph.

“The fallen from the Berryhill district will also be added to the memorial panels and if anyone has a family member who died in the wars we would like them to get in touch.

“We are very impressed with the Environmental Key Fund and they have given us lots of help and support. I would certainly encourage all community groups which need support to submit their application today.”

The £30,000 which the group received came from the Environmental Key Fund’s main grants programme and will also be used to add new seats and landscape the memorial garden."

The work to add the name panels is underway.

I find it odd that even though the steering group set up to raise the money and get the work done was called the "Craigneuk War Memorial Group" the article never once calls it a memorial, always a cenotaph?

they are almost ready Fences are still up

But saw the pannls yesterday gold letters on black (there must be a joblot of this going about)

The new name panels are to be unveiled soon. The Wishaw Press have an article today.

“The new memorial will be officially dedicated on Saturday, August 27, at 11am but anyone wishing to attend should be at the memorial for 10.30am as a large attendance is expected.”

The memorial plaque to William Clamp VC situated in front of the memorial. I've included this here and not as a separate individual memorial as its part of the overall memorial, so felt it should be included here.

David posted some valid points on his blog regarding the addition of the name panels.
I think it's been a fantastic effort and much hard work has been done. However I do agree that the material containing the names looks a litle out of place.
A recent post by milmor_1 regarding the Fauldhouse memorial shows how it may have looked if the choice of material was consistent. I'm sure there are many other examples (and opinions)
