I have come across this Roll of Honour, any thoughts on it?
To what does G.F.B.R.S. Blackfriars Branch refer?
Quite a few appear to be HLI men.

With the Christian symbolism it suggest some sort of Friendly Society to me, especially since it mentions a branch.

Glasgow for G maybe. Society for S perhaps and it could be anything for the others. Friendly for F Bretheren for B. R for Rechabites. I'm just guessing here but that's the way to go.

A look at a Glagow Post Office directory might come up trumps. the NLS has digitised some Scottish PO directories. I don't know if they have any Glasgow ones from the turn of the century.

GLASGOW FOUNDRY BOYS' RELIGIOUS SOCIETY was instituted in 1865. It has for its object the religious, educational, and social elevation of boys and girls. There are eighty-three branches in the city and suburbs, with a membership of 21,000, and a staff of workers numbering close on 2,900. By means of regular Sabbath services, week evening, sewing, cookery, and recreative classes, and other organised efforts for the instruction and encouragement of thrift, the objects of the association are fully maintained and have been eminently successful.

No problem. I've used the Edinburgh PO directories before and they are a handy resource.

Hopefully since this society is still on the go they'd be interested in getting a bit of their history back.

The Tharsis St number listed, does not appear to work, but I have emailed the Boys Bgde Glasgow.

Received an email from the Battalion Secretary The Boys' Brigade, Glasgow Battalion today. He is going to look further into this, and will keep you informed of any developments.

The BB Bn secretary, put me on to another gentleman. He is a fine man, who knows much about the Foundry Boys, and we had a long and interesting chat on the phone. He goes round the schools in Glasgow, giving talks on the Foundry Boys, and their history. The Roll of Honour is on it's way to him, and will be one of the items he uses to illustrate his talks.
