I was wondering how in touch with todays miltary our forum members are?

I have never served.
That said I've always lived in a "garrison town" where friends have served and I have heard what front line duty is really like.

I've often asked those I know who have served in the Falklands, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq what they think of the service they give. Almost universaly they have a high regard for how they are considered for their service to their country and the role they have played.

I have often wondered if it's the same in other places in Scotland where the flow of ifirst hand information perhaps isn't as easy to come by?

I have never served and have had very little contact with serving soldiers or veterans over the years.
Several of my cousins have served in the army and one in the marines and I've occasionally spoken to them about their experiences but they served in the 70's and early 80's so their experiences were mostly tours in Northern Ireland and long spells in Germany, and I'd imagine very different to the experience of serving servicemen today.

I served in the Army for 27 years but left over 15 years ago so am no longer in contact with anyone serving, and any ex servicemen that I meet left years ago. To my knowledge there are no servicemen stationed in Dumfries and Galloway so I am unlikely to meet any here. The Royal British Legion does have contacts with Army, Sea and Air Force cadets in this area which is good. I have spoken to a neighbours son a few times since he finished his training in Catterick and as you would expect, much is the same, but much is different.

i have never served, and don't come from a military family.

I know some veterans, one who served in the Falklands and one who has done at least one term in Iraq. I'm not sure of his current status within the military.
