A query on a possible "non-comm".

I was doing some peripheral work on my family tree and found the death record on ScotlandsPeople of my great, great grandmothers brother.
James Couper (sometimes given as Cooper or Cowper) died aged 41 on 14th of December 1917 at Knightswood Hospital in Glasgow of Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

His occupation was given as Stonecutter and underneath that is written "(1?)st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders"

I have looked on CWGC and SNWM without success. He was born in Glasgow and was married when he died. His home address was in Partick.

Cheers,
Derek.

Derek

If he was serving or recently dicharged he would qualify. The detail suggests he was not serving at his death. Can you advise his home addres and service number, if you can get it. I will check further for you.

Jim, I have no idea what his service number was or how to get it as I only know of him from the Death Certificate.

His home address at time of death was 212 Castlebank Street, Partick, Glasgow.
He was born 10th Aug 1876 in Anderston, Glasgow.
His parents were both deceased by 1917 and were Thomas and Isabella Couper.
His widow was Catherine Leyden.

That's about all I know.

Would there be an Argyll & Sutherlanders WW1 resource that he should be listed in?

Cheers,
Derek.

Derek,

You are very much in luck since his service file has survived in the WO 364 'Pension' records; it clearly states that S/17282 James Couper was discharged on 4 January 1917, cause clearly stated as 'Tuberculosis of Lungs'. A non-comm.

Stuart

Derek

I can get the service record, etc.
As Stuart points out it is a good case but we need to confirm this is the same man from the DC.
I can put the case together and forward him as a non comm case to MOD / CWGC case for you if you wish. You will need to send me the DC from the website link in my signature.

Do you know where he is buried and whether a headstone exists with his name on?

Jim,

I would be grateful and delighted if you would take the job on.
Copy of Death Cert sent. I have no idea where he may be buried I'm sorry to say. I have never traced any of my family burials in the city.

Cheers,
Derek.

Derek

Thanks for the DC which confirms he is the same man and a case can be made as a post discharge death non comm.

S/17282 Pte James Couper, 4th Battalion, The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders has been forwarded as a case, on Derek's behalf, to CWGC / MOD as a post discharge service related death non comm ( Pulmonary Tuberculosis). His details are now in the system.

I am making further enquiries regarding his place of burial.
Will update when further details available.

Well done Derek in finding him.
