Hi Teddy,

I have been out of action for a while but Ken informed me of this thread. A little bit of info I have on file regards the enlistment of James Cowan at the very end of Dec 1914. Details as given on attestation:

17395, James Marchbank, sausage maker, Morton (served 2nd Bn)
17396, Archie Hutchison, grocer, Morton (served 1st & 2nd Bn)
17397, James Nicholson, ploughman, Closeburn (served 2nd Bn)
17398, James Cowan, pork butcher, Glasgow (served 1st Bn)

Should state for those interested, all four men were killed.

Stuart

Re Archibald Todd 23216, 7/8th KOSB

His number is within a group of enlistments mostly via the Derby Scheme; men voluntarily attesting for service in either late 1915 or early 1916, then being called up between Feb and June 1916. Archibald's number indicates that he was called up around mid-March 1916.

He served firstly with the 1st KOSB and latterly with the 7/8th Bn. He was killed during a daytime raid on the German lines in the Loos sector on 18 Sep 1918; 3 officers and 17 men killed (CWGC states 17 Sep for all, but Bn History states raid took place on 18th). I can email the relevant pages of the book for your contact who wishes information.

Best wishes,

Stuart

David, I did put request on Queries and Request page, under Morton Wm, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire to ask for help and to look on Morton site.
These two are for the same WM.

Found that this man is Sergeant John Black, Service No 642 on 1/5th KOSB. He was Pre-war territorial, enlisted in 1910. Served at Gallipoli, landed 6/6/1915 with original contigent. Invalided home, sick - date not known. Discharged (xvi) no longer for military service in November 1915 - so obviously quite seriously ill to have been discharges so quickly.
Death on 19/1/1920 aged 20 years - cause of death as Phthtistis (TB).
This man not found on CWGC or NSWM.
He is commemorated on family grave in Troqueer, Dumfries - along with his brother William Black who also on Morton WM. Private William McKinnell Black Service No 16209 KOSB in 2nd Bn, killed 23/7/1916. Father Adam Black and Mother Mary McKinnell from 41 Rae Street, Dumfries. Both boys born in Morton. The grave and information can be viewed on scottishwargrave site - under Troqueer, Dumfries.
All information from Stewartry, with thanks.
Teddy.

PostPosted: Tue Mar 08, 2011 4:34 pm    Post subject: James Robertson Morton WM Reply with quote

Also information received from Stewatry for this man, as follows
Private James Robertson Service No 20944 in 2nd Battalion The Royal Scots Fusiliers death on 30/7/1916, son of Mrs. Margaret Robertson of Carronbridge. On cwgc and are swnm; on sdgw down as born in Morton.
Main reason why not able to find before was on the WM down as in RS., and we couldnt find anyone; he is in RSF - so mistake on the WM.
Thanks once again to Stewartry for his help.
The Morton book compiled now and off to printers.
Teddy.

Just to update the last man named above
James Cowan enlisted as Private 17398 in December 1914.
In 1911 he was 16 and a pork butcher living with his family at 10 Back Street, Thornhill.
James 44 Freestone Quarryman b. Closeburn, Willie Mina 46 b. Morton [married 1891 in Glasgow] James 16 Pork Butcher b. Glasgow, Thomas 9 & Joseph 7 both b. Morton
Born 1895 at Glasgow Son of James and Willie Minnie (McClounie) Cowan of Troon, Ayrshire. (Source: CWGC and Army Registers of Soldiers effects)
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

At one stage I thought he was the James Cowan KOSB named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial but I don't see any connection.
